Daniel stared at the man who had the same exact face as his late best friend, too stunned to take in more than his features. For countless seconds he just stood there with wide eyes until Cat took the unusually large newborn from his arms. It wasn't until then did he try to pay attention to anything else, like the way he was dressed. It reminded him of a military uniform, only armored and completely black, like he was dressed up as Batman or something for Halloween. Around his chest there were a bunch of straps, making a harness out of an old net or other item he cut up.
Whatever it was they were discussing made no sense to him, until he made it obvious the only thing he was there for was the kids. He opened his mouth to say something but apparently his brain was still reeling because it just snapped closed again. When he finally did manage to say anything, it was to state the obvious fact he couldn't seem to move past. "This is impossible," taking a step forward only to be stopped by the firm grip of one of the men he had been in the car with all day. "You're dead, I was there on scene that day," he nodded once, "I remember."
The brown eyes that were once full of life and held a spark were now hard and darkened. When they turned on Dan, he couldn't stop the shiver that ran down his spine. In all the years he remembered working the job, he knew a killer when he saw one. It was something about the lack of life in their eyes; and this Greg didn't have a single hint of that light. "You would know, wouldn't you? How long did you wait, old buddy? Did you at least wait until I was 'in the ground' before making a move on my widow?" Adding air quotes in his question didn't make it any easier to digest.
Cat's baby daddy made a strange animal-like noise at Greg motioning that Cat was in any way his. Not that either of them seemed to pay him any attention, they were too busy staring each other down in one way or another.
"Make a move...Are you crazy?" Although that's exactly what he'd done the last time he'd seen Cat. Which was one of the reasons he'd been so willing to help her when she was reluctant to give him any real information. He hadn't known why he was so overcome with the urge, but he still felt the remembrance of that in his chest. If she hadn't been so hung up on his 'nobody', he might have actually had a chance.
"Not crazy, just dead, apparently. Thanks to this guy," he said it like this whole thing was some kind of joke, leaning just enough to look around the wall of muscle. For the first time he allowed his sharp glare to land on Cat for more than a passing glance. She was clinging to her children like they were her only true lifeline, his next words making her flinch so hard one would have thought he actually stuck her. "You know, the same guy you were more than happy to jump into my bed with. Were his hands still wet with my blood when you let this one fuck you? Hmm?"
Dan stepped forward to come to her defense, even if their children were a declaration that he might have been right. The other three men beat him to it, telling him off; Kal as he defended his woman, and the others defending who seemed to be their leading female.
"You'd better watch your fucking tongue, less you wish to lose it."
"What gives you the right to say such things to a lady?"
"She was never meant for you or your bed," Kal boosted over the two others, moving again so that he was obscuring the line of sight between Greg and Cat for a second time. "She carries MY offspring on her hip, proof that your hands never should have touched her." Again, Dan didn't quite understand what that had to do with anything to do with this, let alone the fact they were arguing to an actual ghost.
"Now that is an interesting point to bring up," Greg snapped his fingers before pointing in their direction with one hand while leaving the other perfectly still at his side. "Those two little brats are the reason I was forced to come back, because unfortunately for you, my bosses can make use of them."
