A Bump In The Road

"Shut up, Elena." Echo chuckled, talking to her sister on the phone as she gripped her hand on the steering wheel. She heard Elena's muffled chuckle, causing her to giggle along with her. Her long, wavy hair was in a high, messy, ponytail while she drove down the long road to Mystic Falls.

Echo had never even been on the road for as long as she had when she was going to Mystic Falls. Plus, that stupid, but catchy song "Ride" by Lana Del Rey was stuck in her head from the moment she left her house over a day ago.

"Please tell me you're close. I can't even wait until you come! I mean, you've been all the way in Missouri for so long." Elena squealed.

"Lena, the drive from Missouri all the way to Virginia takes at least thirteen hours. I had to stop somewhere before continuing. Come on, stopping at a hotel was the best option. It's physically impossible for someone to drive that long all at once, a girl at least." Echo reasoned, slowly pressing on the brakes so she could stop at the red light.

She could feel that Elena rolled her eyes. "Alright, alright. Just get here as quickly as possible; my friends can't wait to see you!"

"I will, don't worry, I promise." Echo assured.

She didn't get a right away answer. There were a couple muffles with a man ... and then a girl about her age. It didn't bother her too much; she thought since Elena was talking to them now, she'd meet them when she got there in the next half hour.

"Alright, Co, I'll see you soon, ok?" Elena continued, seeming in a sudden hurry.

"Yeah, ok. Bye, Lena." She didn't wait for her to say bye back and just hung up, placing the phone in her glove compartment.

It was late. And chilly. She would know; her window was rolled down and blowing ferocious, cool air into the car. It was like Summer surrendered to Fall willingly and in an instant, night swallowed the day. The sky looked beautiful at this time of darkness, it being painted a reminiscent indigo, the moon's faint gleam shimmering in her rear view mirror.

She sighed as her hefty black Toyota drove solus down the dark, gravel road. She silently adjusted her interior mirror at the front of the car, a string with pink fuzzy dice leading from it hanging at the bottom.

Suddenly, a dark figure appeared in the middle of the road, Echo only noticing when she was almost about to hit it. She panicked and swerved to the side causing her car to topple over and roll down the street for two flips until she was upside down.

Luckily, she was alive, only a tiny trail of blood gliding down her cheek from her right temple. She was getting light-headed as all the blood rushed to her head and her legs went numb. She gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white, pure shock passing through her body non-stop. She banged on the hood of the car, thinking it would do something, but failed miserably and just injured her hand, causing one of her knuckles to break by slamming too hard.

"Somebody help! Please!" Echo screamed, caressing her hurt knuckle.

Suddenly, faint footsteps started to walk towards the car. She thought it must've been the person who was standing in the middle of the road. A fist punched the flat surface of the car ferociously, causing the car alarm to go off and shards of broken glass to tumble down and scratch Echo's vanilla cream face.

"Hello?" She screeched, covering her ears.

The car alarm then stopped and it was silent for a moment; only the quiet chirps of crickets and light whistles of the breeze, whispering to the trees' brown and orange leaves were heard. Swiftly, the man crouched down to her level, Echo jumping to his sudden appearance.

"Hey, hey, hey! It's ok, alright?" The man soothed, seeing he startled her. His voice was calm and soft and his hair was a creamy raven black that went perfectly with his smooth, slightly bruised pale skin. His eyes were shaded bright blue and his bushy eyebrows were softened.

"Hm," He continued, letting Echo's breathing slow down for a minute, "Looks like you're in a bit of a tricky situation."

"Uh, you think?" She snapped sarcastically. He smirked to the sound of her cocky remark.

"Alright, I'm gonna get you out of here." He stood, Echo not wanting him to go. She felt, even with a complete stranger, that she was safe with him when her bright brown eyes met his blue ones.

He pre-warned, gripping the side of the car, "Uh, you might want to hold on tight, ok, young girl?"

"Ok, older man." She mocked, curling her toes from the inside of her shoes and clenching the steering wheel as tightly as she possibly could, closing her eyes shut. He chuckled, and then took a deep breath. He pushed down fiercely, making the car flip over back on its wheels in a split second. Echo peered open one of her eyes, seeing she was right side up and the blood was flowing back down to her heart.

The man appeared next to her car again, his thumbs stuffed in his pockets in achievement, knowing that what he did was great. She exited the car immediately, ignoring the bloody scrape above her knuckles and the stream of blood gliding down her cheek.

"How did you ... it's impossible ..." She searched for the right words to say, "How did you do that?"

"Awe, don't worry about it; you'll find out eventually." He flashed a smile, Echo being unaware that his eyes never leave the shiny, ruby red blood on her face, "You know," He then continued, softly caressing his knuckles on the her flushed cheek, causing her heart to skip a beat, "Since I did you a big favor, it's only fair that I get something in return."

Echo narrowed her eyebrows. "What do you mean? I'm not going anywhere with you. I barely even know ..."

"No, no, no," He interrupted, "not that. You see, you want to know how I flipped your car over, right?" He didn't wait for her to answer and started to play with the ponytail that rested over her shoulder. "Well, I'll tell you this, humans can't do what I just did, so therefore I'm not human."

Her heart dropped and her stomach turned in knots; she knew where this was going.

"Hey, easy, don't go scurrying off yet," He ordered, staring intently into her eyes. Echo found herself unable to move, or run away from the intimidating man. She had been compelled. "Ok, since we know I'm not human, I'll give you another hint." He trailed his finger along the side of her face and swiped a dot of blood on his finger. "This stuff that you humans possess keeps me alive so I don't starve to death."

        Echo's eyes widened. "You're a vampire."

"Ding, ding, ding," He teased, like she was on a game show. "Wow, girly, you're smarter than I thought, you know?" He licked the blood that was splattered on his finger.

"Please don't kill me. Someone is expecting me in Mystic Falls." She pleaded, trying to hold back the tears coming to her light brown eyes.

"Why, Mystic Falls, you say? I'm from there, actually. If you want to go to your car and see your expected company, go on ahead. I'll find you when I get back there."

Realizing she could move, she hurried back to the Toyota, running as fast as her legs could carry her, forgetting that it had just been tipped over so it was unable to move. She reached for the door handle of the driver's seat when a cold, rough hand grabbed her wrist and yanked her away from the car.

"Nah, I've changed my mind," It was the threatening vampire. He twirled her around so she was facing him when he went on, "Your blood is too good to lose. Besides, I might not ever find you again."

His veins popped out of his delicate skin, his eyes pierced red and his fangs flared horrifyingly. Echo had never seen a vampire react to blood like this before. She knew about them, but she'd never met one before. She screamed ear-piercingly as he zeroed in closer and closer to her neck.

Before his fangs could even graze her skin, someone snapped his neck and he fell to the ground, letting go of Echo's wrist. In reaction to the sudden violence, she gasped and slapped her hand over her mouth. When she looked to the man who snapped his neck, he had dirty blonde hair and his eyes were a golden, hollow yellow. He had fangs along with the other vampire and his veins were slipped out of his skin just the same.  Even if did look barbaric, she couldn't help but blush and get butterflies in her stomach at the sight of him.

His face calmed when they made eye contact, him seeing how terrified she was.

"Did you kill him?" She asked, pointing to the body lying on the ground.

He shook his head, "No, no, love. He's just unconscious is all." He said it like it was nothing. Surprisingly, with this man, she felt safer, like there was a sudden relief that filled her body when their eyes met. Better than the man who lied unconscious on the road. Still, even with his British accent, when he took a step closer, she flinched.

"No! Don't get closer! Get away from me! You're just like him!" She backed away further and further until her back hit the car, the wrecked and shattered car.

"Look, I promise I won't hurt you, love. After all, I did save you from someone who was trying to drain you dry. My name is Klaus." He reasoned, creeping closer a bit slower than the pace he was going before. His veins returned under his skin and his golden eyes turned into a shady blue.

Like she cared about his name.

Of course, just her luck, when she tried to race into the car and drive away, her legs gave out and they numbed again. She almost fell to the ground, but Klaus super-sped to her side, supporting her back. Her eyes fluttered as she landed safely in his arms.

"You, nor your car are in any condition to go anywhere." He mumbled and hoisted her up to her feet. He lifted up her chin, so she was forced to look at him. He examined her face until she groaned and hung her head low once more, the movement giving her a headache.

"But I have to go somewhere today ... people are ... they're expecting me in ... in Mystic Falls." She slurred, her brain not being able to compute any on-going words zooming through her head.

"Mystic Falls," He thought, "Why, I live there. Maybe I could take her ..." He decided and started to carry her, bridal style, her long bright brown ponytail flowing down, swishing back and forth with every step he took. Before walking any further, something clicked in his mind. "I almost forgot," He reminded himself and then stood Echo back on her feet once more.

"Hey, hey you," He urged, trying to wake her up, her eyes being shut closed. She gripped on his arms and drearily looked in his eyes. "Once we reach Mystic Falls, you will not remember any of what happened tonight. For all you know, you arrived safely in Mystic Falls and fell asleep in your own apartment." He compelled.

She nodded in understanding and right after, her legs gave out again, Klaus having to pick her up and continue on the path to Mystic Falls. At that moment, he made a mental note in his mind. He would see her again. No matter what, there was something about this girl that dawned on him. He wouldn't be able to stop thinking about her at night and he knew it.

He would find her again ...
