We Meet Again

"Ok, so I understand why you got mad ... but did you really have to break my plant?" Elena joked, smiling widely.

"Hey, you know how I get sometimes!" Echo defended herself, slapping her playfully in the forearm.

The joy lit up Echo's face like a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve, with all the ornaments shimmering when you left it alone in the dark. Elena was safe and they were finally talking face to face. The twenty hours away from home and on the road was worth it now. Elena adjusted her long brown hair behind her shoulders, still grinning beamingly. Her and Echo were sitting in The Mystic Grill at the bar in front of the place with the red, rubber swivel chairs and laminated gravel counter tops, already spending at least two hours of just talking to each other and catching up with their lives.

The downside was, Echo thought that everyone who she had seen or been talked to about was human and that meant Elena had to tell her the truth someday.

"So, when will I meet your friends who seem to be so excited to see me when I come? Which I'm here now." Echo asked, swirling around in her loose seat.

Elena tapped her chin and pondered for a moment. "Yeah, I think you'll see them at our birthday party this Saturday." Echo's eyebrows narrowed and her eyes widened.

"Birthday!? You didn't tell me you planned a party for us!" She exclaimed, a little louder than she should have. The bar tender put a finger up to his lips and chuckled, signaling to quiet down.

Lowering her voice, she continued in Elena's ear, "How could you not tell me? I don't even have a dress to wear and it's Thursday." Elena grabbed her shoulder to comfort her and consoled, "Ok, calm down. I'll do some shopping with you and it'll be all worth your while eventually. You'll be prepared, I promise." She then pointed a finger in her face and scolded, "But we're not buying anything that will make Damon want to eat you alive."

Echo pushed the finger out of her face and laughed. "Fine, Elena, tell me what to do now ?" Elena smiled, giggling up a storm. Right then, they heard a faint buzz.

"Oh, sorry, that's mine." Elena apologized before reaching in her pocket and taking out her phone. It was a text from Stefan.

Stefan: Come over right away! There's something very important to talk about. DON'T BRING ECHO.

Elena sighed as she read the text repeatedly, especially the sentence in all Caps.

She looked up to Echo who was downing her apple cider and calmly told her, "Echo, I've gotta go somewhere ... without you." She almost choked on the cider to the sound of what her sister said.

"Oh gosh, what is it this time?" Echo shouted, annoyed by how busy she was.

"Uh ..." Elena stuttered, not enough detail in the text Stefan sent for her to explain. "Just ... walk yourself home, ok? I'll catch up with you in your apartment in a minute."

And in that very instance, Elena stood from her chair, waved good-bye and left Echo sitting there all alone. She huffed, "Well, might as well go home. I've got nothing better to do." So she stood, too. She stood and left the Mystic Grill, almost forgetting to pay the bartender the bill.

"What is it?! I was in the middle of bonding time with my sister !" Elena yelled infuriatingly, barging through the front door of the boarding house.

She saw Stefan and Damon, sitting side by side on the couch, her blonde best friend Caroline, her big blue eyes staring at her phone as she leant against the wall and then the witch, Bonnie, who had long, dark brown hair, chocolate brown eyes and a tropical dark skin tone sitting in a lone recliner off in the corner of the living room.
