The Dinner

"This party is gonna suck without Damon, Stefan and Echo." Elena nagged as Bonnie curled her hair while staring at herself in the mirror.

"Hey, you don't know that," Bonnie reasoned, trying to make her feel better and fluffing her now curled light brown hair, "Besides, you didn't even want Echo to come."

"So she wouldn't see Klaus if he came," She finished, rolling her eyes, "And look where she is now, being held captive in his home until I give myself up to him."

Bonnie didn't reply. She just sighed. That's when, Caroline entered the door of Elena's bedroom in a gorgeous dress and a big smile carved in her face. Her long, blonde hair was in a messy, wavy bun and her silver high heels set her look to a higher standard. She scurried over to the girls, them not even noticing she was in the room with them.

"Guess who it is?" She asked, covering Bonnie's eyes with her hands.

"Caroline!" They both chorused in unison.

She giggled as Bonnie put down the curling iron and turned to give her a hug. Once their embrace departed, Elena gave her a hug, too. Elena's smile was then put back on and it seemed Damon, Stefan and Echo were slipped past her mind in an instant. Caroline's optimism had the power to do that to people.

"You two look stunning! Especially the birthday girl! I love your dresses!" Caroline complimented, jumping up and down in glee.

        Elena blushed. "Thanks, Care."

There was a small pause. No one knew how to react; usually someone would burst through the door by now and interrupt the conversation, considerably Damon, Stefan or Echo.

But no one ever did.

That was until a shatter was heard from downstairs where the party was raging on. It sounded like someone had tipped over a lamp.

"I guess we should go down there, you know? They might burn the house down if someone doesn't stop them." Bonnie chuckled.

"Yeah." Caroline agreed, but Elena only nodded bashfully.

"Shall we?" Elena asked, outstretching both her arms for them to grab.

"Why, certainly, Miss Gilbert." Caroline laughed, mimicking a British accent.

"But of course!" Bonnie continued, doing the same.

And just like that, arms locked and ready to join the party, they left the room, looking gorgeous for Elena's eighteenth birthday party. Even if it was expected, they all couldn't help but feel empty as they shuffled down the steps to enter the party. Like something was missing.

And indeed, something was ...

The doorbell sounded at the Mikaelson mansion while all four siblings were already sitting at the dining room table, ready to eat. Echo had been treated to a room upstairs, the one with the piano and indigo walls. In all honesty, Klaus had no idea what she would do with her, he would admit. He figured they would all miss her too much and want her back, then he'd bargain for Elena again ... or he'd threaten to kill her if he didn't have Elena by the end of next week.

Doorbell first.

"That must be them." Klaus commented, standing from his seat and scurrying over to the door. Once it opened, there stood Damon and Stefan, smug looks on their faces. He wasn't surprised; they didn't willingly come here.

"Ah, so glad you two showed up!" He cheered, allowing them to step inside.

"Yeah, held against our will, I might add." Damon snarked, rolling his eyes. Klaus growled as he led them to the dining room where two empty seats were already waiting for them. The hum of Echo's piano playing upstairs sounded all the way down to their floor, but no one spoke about it because it was so peaceful and went perfectly with the setting.
