Crushing into Waves

The sun hung high in the clear blue sky over Carolina Beach, its rays dancing on the cerulean

waves that crashed gently along the shore. The salty breeze carried laughter and the faint melody of a distant guitar, blending seamlessly with the rhythmic rush of the ocean. A perfect day to soak in the sun and let worries drift away with the tide.

Y/N stretched out on a striped beach towel, her long wavy brown hair cascading over her shoulders, catching the sunlight in golden streaks. Her tan skin shimmered with sunscreen, and her brown eyes were hidden behind oversized sunglasses as she watched her friends chat and snack on a colorful spread of fruits and sandwiches. They were sprawled around her, joking and laughing, the carefree energy contagious.

But Y/N's attention kept drifting to the group just a few yards away, where a lively game of fútbol was underway. Sand flew up with every kick as the players weaved in and out with impressive agility, their shouts and cheers echoing across the beach. One player, in particular, stood out.

Miko.

Her auburn hair was styled in messy braids that cascaded to her armpits, a mix of waves framing her face. Her skin was sun-kissed, slightly paler than Y/N's, but still with a warm tan that highlighted the intricate tattoos decorating her arms and peeking out from beneath her tank top, trailing along her shoulder blades and down her back. There was a boldness in her movements, a confidence that caught Y/N's attention the moment she saw her.

Miko's laughter rang out as she executed a perfect pass, her blue eyes sparkling with exhilaration. She moved with an effortless grace, her tattoos shifting with each flex of muscle, telling stories Y/N found herself curious to know.

Y/N's friend nudged her, pulling her back to the picnic. "You've been staring for a while now. See something you like?"

Heat rushed to Y/N's face. "What? No, I was just... watching the game." She quickly grabbed a slice of mango, nibbling to hide her embarrassment.

"Uh-huh," her friend teased, glancing pointedly at Miko, who had just scored a goal and was now celebrating with a wide grin. "Sure. Just watching the game."

Y/N couldn't help but smile, her eyes wandering back to Miko, who was now taking a break, chugging from a water bottle. As if feeling the gaze, Miko looked over, her eyes locking with Y/N's.

Y/N's breath hitched, her heart doing a weird fluttery thing in her chest. Caught off guard, she quickly looked away, pretending to be very interested in her half-eaten mango. She could still feel the heat in her cheeks, more intense than the sun's rays.

"Smooth," her friend whispered, barely containing her laughter.

Before Y/N could protest, she heard a voice, smooth and playful, laced with curiosity. "Enjoying the game?"

Y/N's head snapped up, her eyes widening. Miko stood before her, close enough that Y/N could see the tiny freckles on her nose and the playful glint in her blue eyes. Up close, her tattoos were even more mesmerizing—intricate patterns of flowers, vines, and symbols Y/N couldn't quite decipher.

"I... yeah, it's... uh, you're really good," Y/N managed, mentally kicking herself for stumbling over her words.

Miko's lips curled into a lopsided smile. "Thanks. We play every weekend. You should join sometime—if you're not too busy... watching the game."

Y/N's mouth went dry. Was Miko flirting? Her heart skipped a beat, and she struggled to find her voice. "I... I might take you up on that."

"Cool," Miko said, her eyes lingering a moment longer before she turned back to her friends. "See you around... Y/N, right?"

Y/N's jaw dropped. "How did you—"

Miko winked, tapping the corner of her temple. "Your friend's got a loud voice." And with that, she jogged back to her group, her laughter floating back on the breeze.

Y/N stared after her, her heart pounding in her chest, a goofy grin spreading across her face. Her friend burst out laughing, nearly spilling the bowl of strawberries. "Oh, you're gone, girl. Totally gone."

Y/N didn't even bother denying it. Her eyes were glued to Miko, who was already back in the game, moving with that same electrifying energy. Y/N bit her lip, feeling that flutter again. Yeah... she was definitely gone.

And she couldn't wait to see where it would take her.
