THE GIRL GOT UP FROM HER SEAT AND RAN DOWN the stairs of MVP Arena so she could jump onto the court and celebrate with her girlfriend, who had just secured a spot in the Final Four.
Everyone was there. The entire Coss family had flown in from Massachusetts to cheer for Kate and Caitlin on this important day. Clarissa and William were in the front row, hands clasped and eyes shining with pride. Lysander stood tall, while Kaliyah, gently rocked newborn Flora in her arms, the baby barely stirring amidst all the noise.
Sterling didn't look back—she knew exactly where she needed to be. Her boots hit the hardwood as she crossed the edge of the court, weaving past staff and media, until she saw Kate standing near the baseline, beaming and breathless. Without hesitation, Sterling threw herself into her girlfriend's arms, holding her tightly in a hug that said everything she couldn't yet put into words.
Kate caught her mid-spin, lifting her slightly off the ground with a laugh. "You made it," she whispered into Sterling's neck.
"Of course I did," Sterling said, her voice shaky from the running, the adrenaline, and the overwhelming wave of pride. "I wouldn't miss this for the world."
The crowd roared around them. Brooklyn was already in Caitlin's arms near midcourt, both of them laughing and leaning into each other. The arena had turned into a full celebration—confetti was starting to fall, the band was playing, and cameras were everywhere—but Sterling and Kate only saw each other.
"Final Four, baby," Kate said, grinning, her cheeks flushed with effort and excitement. "Can you believe it?"
Sterling looked up at her, heart tight with love. "I always believed in you."
Nearby, Clarissa had a hand over her heart, watching the two girls with teary eyes, while William nudged Lysander and said something that made them both smile. Kaliyah gently bounced Flora, whispering to soothe the baby, and Alessia already had her phone out, recording the moment.
Kate leaned her forehead against Sterling's. "You're my lucky charm, you know that?"
Sterling laughed softly. "Guess you better keep me around for the championship, then."
Kate hugged her again. quick and full of energy, like a promise
Sterling didn't let go. Not yet. Not when everything she had ever dreamed of was standing right there, sweaty and smiling, in her arms. The brunette didn't let go. Not yet. Not when everything she had ever dreamed of was standing right there, sweaty and smiling, in her arms.
A moment later, Clarissa and William made their way onto the court, carefully weaving through the crowd. William's face was lit up with pure excitement, his usual composed demeanor completely replaced by the energy of a lifelong basketball fan witnessing history—and it was his girls who made it happen.
"You were incredible out there," William said, pulling Kate into a proud, fatherly hug. "That three-pointer at the buzzer? I almost lost my mind!"
Kate laughed, still catching her breath. "Thank you, Mr. Coss—"
"William," he corrected, beaming. "I've told you a hundred times."
Sterling smiled at the scene, her heart full as she saw the way her father looked at Kate—with the same pride and tenderness he had for his own daughters.
Then William turned to Caitlin, pulling her into a hug just as warm. "You too, Caitlin. What a game. You girls earned every second of that Final Four spot. We're all so damn proud of you."
Clarissa stood beside him, more composed but just as touched. She placed a gentle hand on Caitlin's shoulder and gave Kate a smile that said more than words. "You both played with heart. That's what matters most."
Brooklyn had joined them now, lacing her fingers with Caitlin's. "Told you we were gonna get there," she teased, nudging her girlfriend.
"Yeah, yeah," Caitlin laughed, squeezing her hand.
Behind them, Lysander came up to them, while Kaliyah rocked Flora in a quiet corner, humming to keep her calm amidst the chaos.
"Not every day you get to say two of your daughters made it to the Final Four," William said, half to himself, still grinning ear to ear. "Feels like I should be giving a victory speech or something."
Sterling laughed. "You kinda are, Dad."
And for a moment, everything slowed—the lights, the crowd, the noise. Just the warmth of family, celebration, and the feeling that they were exactly where they were meant to be.
Then Kaliyah made her way toward them, Flora cradled delicately in her arms. She wore a soft, proud smile, her eyes filled with warmth as she looked at the two players who had just made history.
"You two were amazing," Kaliyah said, shifting Flora slightly. "She slept through most of it, but I'm telling her all about her aunts' big day." Kate's face lit up as she reached out, and Kaliyah nodded with a chuckle, carefully placing the newborn in Kate's arms.
"Oh, hi there, Flora," Kate whispered, instantly softening. "You picked a great day to make a public appearance, huh?"
Caitlin leaned in, her expression melting. "She's so beautiful," she cooed, gently tickling the baby's cheek. "You've got the squishiest cheeks in the whole arena, you know that?" Flora stirred slightly, blinking up at Kate as if she already recognized her. Caitlin let out a soft laugh, completely smitten.
"I think she knows who just secured that Final Four spot," Lysander joked. They all laughed, even Alessia, who had been standing quietly nearby, capturing the moment with her phone.
Then Caitlin turned, spotting someone from the team's media staff nearby with a professional camera slung over their shoulder.
"Hey!" she called out. "Can you take a photo for us?"
The staff member nodded enthusiastically and moved into position. Brooklyn helped arrange everyone while Caitlin carefully took Flora back from Kate and handed her to Kaliyah.
"Okay, everybody in!" Brooklyn called out.
They gathered quickly—Kate and Sterling in the middle, arms around each other; Caitlin and Brooklyn right beside them, fingers intertwined; William and Clarissa standing proudly in the back with Lysander. Kaliyah held Flora lovingly in the front, and Alessia stood tall at the edge, flashing a peace sign with a knowing grin.
"Alright, ready? One... two... three—Final Four!"
