chapter 10

Zayn pointed to the park across the street. From what I could see, there were hills and hills of the greenest grass and many oak trees. No cedar? A baseball field stood empty and there were a couple of kids riding their bicycles down the wide lane. We walked for a short distance towards the gateway that led to the entrance of the park. Zayn pointed to three other boys sitting on a bench. Great, this is going to be divine.

“Zayn, it’s seriously okay, can I just –?”

“Nah don’t worry about it babe.” He replied distantly.

Babe?!  Did he want a piece of my mind?! The trio that were sitting on the bench across a field of muddy grass were throwing a football back and forth. Zayn called out to them and they turned their heads in unison. He began whispering to me as he jogged (sprinted, really) towards his friends.

“Alright, the blonde is Niall.” Zayn began. Niall? The name was so familiar. “The brunette is Liam. If you remember he’s… mature…” Zayn trailed off.

“Alright. What about curly?”

“His name is Harry. Cheeky lad.”

The boys now stood up and Zayn jogged across the field and slapped their backs. I stopped at the outskirts of the football field and looked around anxiously. Zayn beckoned me over and I forced my feet to walk towards them. Trying my best not to be awkward, I smiled (awkwardly of course).

“Hi, I’m Elizabeth.” I rubbed my eye gawkily and scrunched my nose.

“Liam, nice to meet you.” Said the brunette.

“The names Harold Edward Styles, but you can call me Harry… Zayn, you should’ve brought me a girl as well!” Zayn rolled his eyes.

“Er… Hello Eliza, don’t think I need to introduce meself,” I turned around to face the boy who just spoke. Niall? He was in my bio class in university! Of course, no wonder he looked familiar.

“Niall Horan?” He nodded enthusiastically, “Wow, small world.” I gave him an awkward hug. I remember talking to him in the lecture hall on the first day of my classes. He was one of the friendliest people in the class however I hadn’t talked to him for months. He had bleached his hair blonde which may explain why I hadn’t recognized him instantly.

“You know each other?” Zayn was clearly surprised.

“Yea, we have class together in uni.”

“Zayn you’ve got competition.” Harry said, sneering.

“Shut up will you?” Zayn scowled at Harry who gave him an innocent look and winked at me.

“Er… So, I know you guys wanted to play football. Um, you know I don’t mind sitting and reading, I did bring a book.” I said matter-of-factly. They turned to look at me and Zayn shook his head.

“Scared Eli?” He cocked his eyebrow.

“Yeh, we’ll go easy on you, don’t you worry.” Niall smirked.

“Oh, you’re on!” I grabbed the football from him and raced him to the soccer field, a couple of yards away. Zayn and the other boys hung back a bit, it looked like they were talking. I turned to Niall who had a huge smile on his face.
