chapter 45
I was drying my wet hair when I heard my mobile ringing. Scrambling to get the phone, I quickly switched the blow-dryer off and nearly threw it away before grabbing a towel and flinging it on my body. I ran out to the bedroom and snatched my flip phone from the vanity, answering it a millisecond before the call would’ve been cut–
“Niall?” I asked, hoping it was him.
“…Niall? What?”
It was Ella.
“I’m expecting a call from someone. Tell me what you want, quickly.” I was annoyed because Zayn would be home any second and I still wasn’t ready. The signal was the call from Niall–then I would know that Zayn was nearly here.
“Whoa, cranky pants. Gran wanted to ask you when you guys are coming.”
“In an hour!”
“What are you wearing? I don’t know what I should wear. Harry’s coming over tonight as well–”
“Ella, I realize that the world may crumble to pieces if you don’t look good, but I’m seriously anticipating a phone call, I need to hang up!”
“Alright, alright. I’ll see you in an hour then. Drive safe, it’s crazy outside!”
“Love you.” I hung up quickly before looking at the clock.
5:39.
I raced back to my bathroom and quickly finished drying my hair.
I stared at myself in the mirror, my dark blue eyes staring back at me. Turning away from my reflection, I gently removed the hanger from the red dress I was going to wear tonight and examined it for a second. It was really simple and lingered just above my knees. Sighing, I got dressed in silence; though I was used to the loneliness by now, it still struck me as completely wrong.
I gave myself one last look in the mirror.
And then my phone rang. This time, I knew it was Niall.
“Hello?”
“He just stepped out my door, he’ll be at your place any second!”
My heart began to flutter, the butterflies returning to my stomach. “I don’t know if I can do this, Niall.”
“It’s too late to second guess now! You’re going to be alright.”
“Easy for you to say. You’re an expert–”
“Don’t forget about A-minor after the C-major, alright?”
“I’m hyperventilating. I can’t do this. I’m going to screw up.”
“Listen, I need to leave for my parents’ soon, I need to get ready. Zayn will be there any second, you’re going to have to do something if you want to have a merry Christmas.”
I sighed, “Okay, okay. I’ll be in the toilet, vomiting my guts out.”
“Uh, I–okay. Good luck, Eliza.”
With another sigh, I hung up and closed my eyes, desperately trying to stop my stomach from somersaulting.
Breathe.
My eyes flew open as I realized that Zayn was going to be here soon. After adjusting my dress, I ran to the small room behind the kitchen cabinet and glanced in.
The piano sat peacefully across the snowy window, beautifully adorned by my paintings which hung in random places on the walls. I began rehearsing in my head as I grabbed the matches from atop the piano. Fumbling with the stick a couple of times, I managed to light one. As an attempt to relax myself, I inhaled, carefully lighting each candle. Once I was done, I walked over to the fireplace and turned it on, thankful for the sudden glow that painted itself across the small room.
