chapter 51

“What should we order?” I asked, turning to Zayn who sat on the sofa, deep in thought. “We can have Mexican or Italian, though I’m not too fond of the new restaurant that opened down the street. I went with Ella after work, it tastes disgusting. I guess that’s what you get after waitressing at a five star restaurant.” I laughed, turning to look at Zayn who seemed disgruntled. “Okay… If not Mexican or Italian, then say, Chinese? Come on, I’ve been craving sweet and sour shrimp for the past year. It’ll do you good as well, you’re getting thinner than me.”

Again, he didn’t respond.

“Okay, I’m starting to think that you only like your mum’s cooking, so how about we settle for a pizza? I think that’s fine, I’m starving and that’s the fastest thing that’ll arrive.” Digging up my cell phone from my pocket, I looked for the pizza place’s number. “What do you want? The usual or something outside the box, something spontaneous? Tell me now so I don’t look like an idiot–”

“I don’t fucking care!” He yelled suddenly, making me jump in terror. “Can’t you see that I don’t give two shits? Order whatever the hell it is you want to order and leave me alone. God.” Zayn fumed angrily and I recoiled from him as though scared of his next outburst.

“What the hell, Zayn?” I asked, shaking my head. I got up from the sofa and was about to walk away from the moody asshole when he grabbed my wrist and flung me down beside him.

Before I could squirm away, he wrapped his arms around me. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean any of that.”

“Yes, you did. It’s obvious you don’t care. The least you could do is nod or say something instead of sitting there with your balls in a hooch.”

Zayn sighed, “I know, I’m sorry.”

“You’ve been saying that a lot these days,” I snapped.

“I just–don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

Humiliated, I looked away, angry tears prickling my eyes. “Let me go and never speak to me again.”

“Never is a long time,” Zayn said, lowering his voice to a raspy whisper. I rolled my eyes and tried, but failed, to push his face away from mine. He was smiling now, I could hear the arrogance in his voice.

And then, before I could stop him, he was on top of me, his fingers tickling the shit out of my poor stomach. I tried pushing him away but it was useless. “Stop–Zayn! I will kill you!” I shrieked, kicking at him.

And then suddenly he was off of me, clutching his side with pain. “Ow…” He moaned, his eyes shut tightly.

I was up in a second and beside him, cursing myself for hitting him. “I’m so sorry, Zayn! Where are you hurt?!”

He opened his eyes and cackled, pushing me back down again. It was hard to be surprised. “I can’t believe I fell for that.”

“You never learn…” Zayn laughed before grabbing my phone from where it lay on the ground before getting up and dialing. “What do you want on the pizza? Tell me now so I don’t look like an idiot.”

A few weeks had passed since my granddad’s death.

It felt weird, oddly surreal as though it still hadn’t really hit me yet. I guessed it would just be a matter of time before I’d get used to the hole in my heart. I felt sad for my grandmother more than anything.

I was sitting in the lecture hall, not really paying much attention to what was being said; instead, I found myself gazing at Liam whilst twirling Zayn’s ring on my finger. Liam looked at me and frowned when he realized I was staring.
