chapter 42: part 1
I could taste the tension in my mouth as Zayn drove solemnly down the highway, not saying a word to me. It was clear that he was bothered and as his girlfriend I should’ve asked about what I’d heard yesterday but I didn’t have the heart to hear the truth.
Or the lie.
Zayn didn’t know that I had overheard his conversation with Alisha.
Even if I wanted to say anything what was I to say? ‘Oh, hey faithful boyfriend how was your day yeah mine was swell oh by the way I overheard you talking to that filthy whore about god knows what.’
How do you say that without sounding like a nosy and psychotic bitch?
I shook my head slightly, adjusting the dress that Zayn had bought.
Zayn. Everything was Zayn. His smell, his touch, his damn laughter. He was ruining me. Was he a liar? Was he a liar like Trey? I couldn’t stand the thought. Maybe I was ruining myself; maybe it was just me, high on my own thoughts, my own fears, my very own aching and regrets.
Zayn cleared his throat. “So, uh… How was your exam?”
I smiled, sadly. “You remembered? Wow, thanks…”
He shook his head. “I’m sorry, it – I,” His voice cracked. “I’m under a lot of pressure…”
“I totally understand.”
“I’m sorry, I – Wait, what?”
“It’s alright, Zayn. It must be hard dealing with two things at once.” He looked at me irritably before turning his attention back to the road. We didn’t speak after that.
I didn’t mind and I don’t think Zayn cared.
Reaching the venue, a nearly half hour later, we parked in the lot quickly and scrambled out as we were already late for Doniya’s wedding.
Gotta fake the smile to go the mile.
Closing the car door with a thud, I looked up at the dark, starry sky above me and sighed, beginning to walk towards the beautiful building. My heels clicked loudly on the snowy concrete as I hurried inside, not waiting a second for Zayn. I entered the hall alone and was instantly met by the grand foyer, a welcoming smile on the girls at the front, and comforting warmth. I took a deep breath and walked over to one of the girls sitting at the front table and smiled.
“Hi.”
“Hey! I’m Salman’s younger sister.”
“I could tell, same radiant smile.”
She laughed cutely before holding out her hand. “My name is Mona.”
I reached for it and shook it thoroughly. “Eliza.” I saw a flicker of confusion in her eyes and I began to explain my connection. “I’m Don’s brother’s girlfriend.”
Mona paused for a second before nodding slowly, narrowing her eyes. “…Zayd, right?”
“Zayn, actually.” I turned around and saw him standing behind me like a looming shadow, a small grin on his face. Mona blushed furiously as he winked at her, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “It was close though.”
“Yeah, er, I’m sorry, I’m no good with names–”
“Don’t worry about it.” He looked around and waved at a group of his friends before wrapping his arm around my waist. I froze at his touch… And he seemed to notice. A moment later, I felt his grip slacken against my back.
