chapter 48

My shoes clicked loudly on the cement as I ran as fast as my legs would carry me. My heartbeat was racing my breath, my head pounding as though it were being stoned by reality. With a heave, I pushed through the revolving doors, nearly killing somebody whilst I did. I hurried through the hospital, pushing past saddened visitors or conversing surgeons, running like a psychopathic idiot. Turning the corner, I ran to the elevator and jammed my finger onto the carefully drawn arrow pointing upwards before looking back to see if Zayn had caught up to me.

He hadn’t.

Turning back to face the elevator doors, I closed my eyes as I waited for the familiar beep to tell me it was here. My thoughts were bombarding my head, entering without permission and leaving with anger. “Come on,” I muttered under my breath, pushing my finger onto the button a couple of times before the elevator doors finally opened.

Rushing inside, I was relieved to see that it was empty. I pushed the curved, bolded number and in a few seconds the elevators door closed, leaving me alone with my thoughts. As soon as I reached my floor, I flew out of the elevator, taking a left and running down the hall. My breathing resuming it’s pace, I ran to the information desk and looked desperately at the nurse sitting behind the glass. He looked up at me, his eyes widening as I struggled to breathe.

“Darling, take a deep breath–”

“Benjamin Stevens. Where…?”

I saw a look of understanding flash in the nurse’s eyes as he gave me a solemn look before nodding towards the end of the corridor. “He’s in surgery right now. You’re his granddaughter? Your family is in the lounge across the Operating Room.”

I nodded, giving him a grateful smile before walking slowly down the corridor, my feet stopping abruptly a metre away from the room as I collected myself.

With a painful sigh, I glanced in and that was all it took-once glance at my broken family left my heart in tiny shreds. Jose and Adrianna were sitting together, her arms wrapped around him, his head in his hands. My gran was in a state, her skin paler than usual as she sat in between my uncles as they consoled her, a lone tear blemishing her cheek. On the opposite ends of the room sat Ella and Jasper, Dean leaning against the green wall.

He was the first to notice me.

“Eliza.”

My family looked up at me and I stared at each of them, unsure of what to say or what to do. My gran shook her head when I looked at her, my uncles smiling sadly at me. Jose’s eyes locked on mine for more than a fleeting second but they were empty and hollow.

“H-how is he?” I asked, my voice sounding harsh and villainous as it broke the silence.

Ella shook her head. “All four arteries are blocked-but… but the doctors say there’s hope. It’s not over yet.” Her lip trembled and Jasper hugged her, his own tears joining hers.

Though relief flooded into me like a wave of calm, I felt horrible, almost like something was wrong. Like a puppet on a fragile string, I walked over and slumped onto the only other bench that was left unoccupied.

Cursing myself for having my mobile off, my head fell to my hands when I realized my mistake. There was a chance that I could’ve reached the hospital earlier, I could’ve spoken to my granddad, could’ve seen him, could’ve held him.  I began to vent in nothing but utter desperation and wistfulness when I felt a comforting weight beside me. Strong, familiar arms enveloped my body into their hold and I looked up.

Nothing could’ve comforted me the way his hazel eyes did, the way they whispered comfort even in the terrible silence.

I began crying then-the thought of losing someone again was unbearable. My grandfather had been there since forever-from the beginning until now.
