chapter 23

I nearly screamed.

“Ella!”’ I jumped up and enveloped her into a massive hug, nearly crushing her bones.

“Seriously, why are you so high strung? Taking cocaine? Because I’ll know. That’s familiar territory, remember?” She laughed.

“Ella, don’t joke about that.” I hugged her a little tighter. “You will never know how much I missed you.”

“If you continue to crush me, you may not get a chance to tell me.”

I rolled my eyes and let go of her.

“Hey! Where’s-”

“How is my beautiful granddaughter doing?” I spun around and saw my grandparents behind me. I let go of Ella instantly and hurried to give them a hug.

Even in old age, my granddad was still tall as ever.

“How are you m’dear?”

“Perfect.” I gave him a smug grin. “As per usual.”

“That’s what I love to hear. But tell me honestly, there is something wrong.” I looked at him, pretending like he was crazy and out of his mind, as if he had no clue whatsoever about anything, I shook my head.

“Nothing is wrong.” I bent down a little to hug my grandma who looked exhausted.

“Eliza, we’ll take a taxi back to our house. You take Ella back to her bungalow. Oh, you girls are growing up too fast.” My grandma was the sentimental one in the family, if you haven’t already figured that out.

I shook my head before taking the suitcase from her hand and began to lead them towards the entrance. “Forget that. How was your trip?”

“Ah, splendid. It’s a beautiful place, incredibly relaxing. I suppose America is not that bad.”

Ella laughed. “No, those people are idiots. A girl at the lodge noticed my accent and asked me where I was from. So I told her, UK. And she asked me if that was in Europe.” She leaned in now and whispered. “Though there are some very fine men. OH, do you like our tans?”

“I like granddad’s and grandma’s… But you look overcooked.” Ella slapped my arm. We reached the entrance of the airport and there were a few taxis waiting. We bid farewell to our grandparents, helping them in with their luggage. Ella and I got in a taxi of our own after stuffing her baggage in the trunk.

Ella explained to me about her adventures in the Hawaiian Escape (what she calls her holiday). I could see that the taxi driver was amused, clearly reminiscing about the days when he was as young as she. We paid the fare and before I knew it, we were already inside the flat, heaving her stupid suitcases into the smaller bedroom.

“Eliza! I want the bigger bedroom. And the bungalow looks different. Who painted the walls? And where is the coffee table? I swear there was a coffee table here. And Eliza, why is your stuff here?” Her eyes narrowed. “What is going on?

She had to know sooner or later. “I broke up with Trey.”

Her mouth fell open. “Why?”

“He was cheating.”

“Oh. Well he didn’t deserve you then. Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

“I didn’t want to ruin your holiday.”
