chapter 32

“What’s wrong with my car?” I asked Zayn, as I slammed my foot on the brakes of my 1997 Lincoln. I turned to face him, waiting for the signal to turn green.

“Nothing’s wrong…”

“You flinch every time I go over the speed of forty kilometres an hour, you either have a problem with my car or with my driving, and it better not be my driving.”

“It’s both,” He blurted out.

I gave him a sweet smile before glancing back at the road. “Next time, you walk.”

Zayn’s boxster had been dropped off this morning to his private mechanic for an oil change.

Oh, how foolish of me.

According to my boyfriend, the Zaynster’s oil is not simply changed. It is refined.

The boy is deeply in love with a car.

“Left from here!” Zayn spoke up. I was feeling generous this morning and so I’d graciously offered to drive him to his campus, which was conveniently only a couple minutes away from mine.

“Slow down, Eli!”

“I’m going so slow!”

“Watch out, there’s a car ahead!”

“I can see, Captain Obvious.”

“Take a right at that stop sign.”

I nodded, rolling my eyes, switching lanes abruptly.

“I’m too young to die…”

I groaned, bringing my foot down on the brake, reducing my speed to the limit as I turned the corner. “Will you relax?”

“Relax? Aside from a dislocated head, you’ll get a hefty fine for driving at speeds lightning wouldn’t recognize.”

“If lightning won’t recognize it, how will a cop?” I gave him a smug smile. “For your information, I have never-“

“Eli.”

“In my life, ever, received a speeding ticket and I plan to -“

“Eli-“

“I plan to keep it that way, thank you very-“

“Eliza!”

“What?!”

“There’s a fucking cop behind you!”

I froze.

My hands tightened around the wheel, my eyes bolting to the rearview mirror.

He wasn’t lying.

“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!”

“Pull over!”

I began panicking as my feet froze, my mind blanking.

“What do I do?” I cried.

“Pull over, Eliza!”

As if in slow motion, I wheeled over to the side of the road, my mind buzzing as if a million wasps were stuck in my ear as I pushed the hazard button.

I desperately tried to remember everything my granddad told me about getting pulled over by a cop when I heard Zayn giggling like a schoolgirl beside me.

I glared at him.

“I told you! You should always listen to me!”

“This isn’t funny!”
