chapter 54
I had thrown on one of my stupid polka dot PJs when the doorbell rang making me jump a little in surprise. I was shattered and weary and miserable–Liam’s attitude had been a severe and humiliating setback and the last thing I wanted to do right now was be in the company of anything else that breathed.
Sighing, I closed my eyes for a second before making my way over to the door. Forcing a small smile on my face, I reached for the door and held it open.
“You took forever!” Ella yelled, almost as soon as I let her in. It was raining outside and she was soaked. In her arms were two tubs of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, a bag of potato crisps, a pack of Kleenex, some CD’s titled “best hits of the decade.”
Right.
Closing the door behind her, I stared at Ella struggling to hold everything when she looked at me and frowned.
“Gee, Eliza. You are awfully kind, you know, thank you for offering to help me.”
“Oh, right, sorry.” Taking the ice cream from her I led her back to the small lounge, unsure of what to do or what to say. Placing the two large tubs on the ground, I sat down as well before leaning my back against the couch.
“It’s been a week, stop moping,” My sister said, throwing her soggy coat onto the carpeted floor. Normally I would’ve complained but I didn’t really give a damn. Ella sat down and mirrored me, taking a seat on the ground against the couch adjacent to mine.
“How’d you get here?” I asked her. “Gran drove?”
She shook her head, turning away to grab the bag of crisps before ruthlessly tearing it open.
“Harry?” I asked, swallowing the lump in the back of my throat. At the mention of his name, she froze up a bit before frowning.
“We – er, called it off, a few weeks ago.”
“You don’t tell me shit.”
Ella shrugged. “I didn’t want to make a big deal out of nothing, we weren’t even serious. And granddad had just – just… well yeah.”
“Are you doing okay?” I asked her, fully aware of the answer.
She shrugged again before popping a potato crisp into her mouth, “You know what? I’m not okay but I’m okay with that.” Ella smiled, throwing me a blanket she’d pulled off of the couch. “I don’t really care anymore. I’m not going to dwell on things that are gone. I’ve done that too often and for too long and now the stakes are just too goddamn high.”
After a while, I nodded. “I understand. Easier said than done, though.”
“Practice makes perfect.” Ella pulled out her phone then and her face lit up in the darkness. “Your friends are just around the corner,” She said before picking up the CDs she brought.
“I find it amusing how you talk to my friends more than I do.”
She grinned. “You’re so anti-people, it’s funny.”
I didn’t respond to that, particularly because she was right and I didn’t have much to say in retort.
“Jasper has the worst taste in music–what is this stupid, American pop music?”
“Isn’t your favourite band American?” I asked, eyebrows raised.
She held up a finger. “That’s different. What is this? Look at this album, ‘the backstreet boys’… What kind of a retarded name is that?”
