chapter 58
“I look like an idiot!” I screeched, tugging at my hair that no longer fell past my shoulders. “What have I done?” I asked, running my fingers through my hair that was once long and brown.
It was nearing five o’clock in the night and in precisely two hours, Seth would be picking me up for our date. It was Sabrina’s idea to cut my hair and dye it blonde. It had taken a lot of persuasion, but I ended up agreeing.
“It looks amazing!” She said, giving me a nonplussed look. Staring back at myself in the mirror, I felt like I didn’t even know who I was anymore. My hair was now an acrid dark blondish colour and it curved inwards, barely reaching my face.
The hairdresser had tried – and failed – to satisfy me and in terrible anguish, had left me alone to deal with my misery.
“You’re being a big baby!” Sabrina said when we stepped out of the barber shop after paying.
“This is your entire fault,” I said, wishing I could go back in time and stop myself from being so rash. “I look like a bimbo – he’s a doctor, Sabrina, he’s got to have some standard!”
“You look great, seriously, this haircut is doing you well–”
“What if he thinks I look hideous and decides he doesn’t want to go out with me, after all?”
Gazing avidly at the lot, Sabrina narrowed her eyes, scanning it for her car. “The blonde really brings out your eyes–”
“And blonde? What was I thinking?”
“Eliza, relax. You look fine.”
“I don’t know, I think it’s such a drastic change–”
“Which is exactly what you need. You look perfect, so shut up.”
“I hate you so much, Sabrina.” I said while getting into my car and closing the door behind me. She toppled in and laughed.
◊
By five o’clock that evening, the only thing I wanted to do was crawl into my bed and die. All I couldseem to do was pace around my house uncomfortably, a huddle of piercing thoughts making me want to vomit.
5:01.
Anticipating the doorbell, I gave myself a good look in the mirror and cringed. I couldn’t recognize myself. I had decided on wearing a bright, red dress that lingered decently above my knees though feeling a bit simple afterwards, I carefully got out a pair of diamond earrings I hadn’t worn in years.
5:07.
Frowning, I looked around for my phone as I fumbled with the earrings and my eyes landed on the silver ring that Zayn had given me. Angrily, I took the ring and threw it into the top drawer of my vanity, disappointed that he’d crept into my mind yet again. Closing my eyes, I tried very hard to channel all thoughts about Zayn out of my brain but then – the doorbell rang.
Standing where I was, my feet glued to the ground, I stared at myself in my mirror for a good minute before getting a grip. I grabbed my purse and a few of my other things before jolting down the hall and flinging the door open.
“Good eve–” Seth’s mouth fell open when he saw me.
“Hi.” I said, raising an eyebrow.
“Eliza – Eliza, is that you?”
“Er, yeah… I dyed my hair. And I cut it. Well, I didn’t do it myself, someone else did it for me obviously –well, do you like it?” I asked, carefully.
