chapter 53
“Is she dead?” I heard someone whisper.
Keeping my eyes closed, I felt my mind swinging to the brink of awareness, though still slipping away from reality and closer to my dreams. Wishfully, I begged for the voice to be Zayn’s because that would mean that he’d returned and that everything would be alright and that we were going to work it out–
But of course, reality is a fucking cow.
“Shut up for once in your life, Ella–” It was Jose. Groaning inwardly, my grip on the blanket tightened.
“Shut up for once in your life, Ella,” She threw back, mocking my older brother.
I shut my eyes tightly, the looming headache still making a special appearance in the back of my mind.
I had stayed in bed all day yesterday, hoping, praying, wishing that it was only a dream. I’d only gotten up to shut the curtains and grab some toilet paper rolls from my bathroom so I could cry my life away.
But eventually, the tears had stopped and I had fallen asleep.
As suddenly as I had woken up, the blanket was being yanked off of me–much to my displeasure–and I was being shook violently as though I were a rag doll.
“Ger off me–” I murmured, trying to kick Ella in the gut so she would back off.
Unfortunately for me, Jose had joined the fight and I was soon being propped upwards, the warmth of my blanket far from my fingertips. Feeling naked and exposed, I glared at my siblings as they looked at me in shock.
“What the fuck happened to you?” Ella asked as she tore away from me like I was sick with a deadly and contagious epidemic.
“We’ve been ringing you all day, all night!” Jose said, sitting on the edge of my bed, “Gran is so worried, we called your loser friends, Sabrina and Lindsay, and I was this close to ringing up 999–”
“For the four thousandth time, her name is Lisa,” I snapped, fuming at the two people who had violated my privacy. “And I do not want to be here right now, least of all with you annoying farts so leave me alone–”
As if to prove her superiority, Ella walked over to the window and with one strong push, threw the curtains apart, making me cringe as the sunlight poured in. With a smirk, she walked back to my bed and continued to ramble. “I called Zayn but–”
“You did what?” I bellowed, rubbing my temples with frustration.
“Relax, his number isn’t even in service anymore. That’s when I began to worry. Where is he? His car isn’t in the lot and his stuff isn’t here either…” Ella shut up instantly then, her eyes widening when she realized something. In a much softer voice, she crawled onto the bed, coming real close to my face and spoke, “Eliza, where–”
Looking down at my hands, I shook my head.
I was about to look up when I realized I couldn’t. Ella was hugging me, her arms wrapped around my body, her head buried in my hair. When she pulled away, I shook my head again and looked over at Jose who had stood up now and was looking down at me.
“Wait, what happened? Where is Zayn?” He asked.
Ignoring him, I turned my attention to Ella who was smiling sadly at me. “I actually liked him…”
“Liked who?” Jose asked, looking frantically at the both of us like a child wanting in on a joke.
“What happened, Eliza?” Ella asked after a few seconds of silence.
