chapter 38
I lazily slapped the alarm clock that had begun to buzz in my ears, indecently invading my soundless sleep. A nearby rustling disturbed my comfort and I opened my eyes sluggishly. I was startled to see that the spot next to me was empty–I could’ve sworn that Zayn was lying there a second ago. Still, I smiled to myself as I recalled last night.
I was twenty-two years old. And this is absolutely shocking, I know, but I didn’t feel any different.
I yawned then, stretching my arms and legs. My mother’s photograph lay beside me on the night side table, a simple birthday message from my older brother written carefully on the back. I had called Ella last night after Zayn and –well she’d sounded quite happy and, er clean, so I decided to trust her judgment for once.
As my thoughts continued to grow, so did my restlessness. It was hot–Zayn had raised the heating since he loved sleeping in burning, thick temperatures. I was the total opposite–winter nights were the best ones. I kicked the flimsy duvet off of my right foot as I turned around, exposing it to the air. I extended my ankle over the edge of the bed and felt relieved as the cool air wrapped itself around my foot.
And then suddenly, cold fingers latched tightly onto my ankle, pulling on my leg roughly as I yelped, instantly thinking of all the untethered souls released from the very depths of hell. I flung the blanket off of me and yanked my leg away only to see the culprit laughing at me from his position on the floor.
I groaned.
Zayn didn’t stop laughing as he jumped on the bed and began crawling on top of me like a ravenous sabre-toothed tiger ready to pounce on its prey. He grinned evilly, his necklace dancing on my chest as he leaned in, his smile challenging my scowl.
“Good morning, Eli.”
I shook my head. “You suck.”
It was a pathetic response but I wasn’t to blame. His warm breath tickled my lips as he brought his own dangerously close to my neck. “Waking up next to you is the best feeling in the world.”
“Why are you awake?”
“Did you expect me to sleep after last night?”
“Shut up.”
His fingers traced loose circles on my arm, leaving a trail of goose bumps behind. “Are you sore, babe?”
“You’re not that good.” I said, rolling my eyes.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“You ready for another round, then?” Zayn growled, before roughly biting my ear.
I laughed, pushing him off of me. I was about to get up when he pulled on my arm, a devious grin coiling on his face.
“I don’t think so…” He whispered before pushing me underneath him. I concentrated on his lips as he hovered over me, his smile silencing itself.
“I love you,” He said.
“I love you more.”
“Impossible,” He replied, before kissing me on my jawline. “Dirty babe, you see these shackles, baby, I’m your slave.”
I rolled my eyes. “You totally just ruined the moment.”
“I’ll let you whip me if I misbehave…”
“Shut up, Zayn.”
“It’s just that no one makes me feel this way…”
I laughed at the look on his face and then, before I could stop him, he licked my lips.
