chapter 40
“Eliza…”
“One second, it’s almost done.”
“Put it down…” Zayn said, moving my hair to one side and placing a kiss on my shoulder.
“Just a few more pages,” I said, distracted by the book that he had brought me earlier this afternoon. The candles flickered in our bathroom, creating an ethereal glow that danced on the walls surrounding us. Rose petals were placed around the bathtub, two tall glasses of wine sitting on the ledge.
Zayn shook his head, his fingers waltzing up my arm rhythmically. “Look at my fingers. They’ve got wrinkles.”
“Mhm…” I said, turning the page of the book. I heard him sigh, his arms wrapping themselves around my waist under the soapy water. I smiled as he started humming along to the light music he’d put in the background.
I’d called Zayn two hours ago during the lecture break and had complained about how stressed I was and that I was about to faint and that my brain was about to explode. Being the most amazing boyfriend on the planet, I’d come home to the most romantic bath ever and a handful of warm kisses from him.
I realized that I was no longer reading the book he’d brought, rather I was paying attention to his every sigh, every movement, every laugh. He groaned for the hundredth time tonight before blowing a few bubbles off of my shoulder.
“You know this was for you, Eliza. This is me being romantic, but I guess if you don’t want it–”
“Zayn, be quiet. It’s getting to the good part,” I said, pretending to be annoyed. I was glad he couldn’t see my smile – he’d read the lie on my face like words in an open book.
“Alright, that’s it.” He grabbed the book with his soapy hands and threw it far from my reach, almost knocking a candle down. I rolled my eyes, turning around to kiss him on his lips and he frowned. “You did that purposely. You weren’t into the book, you just like to tease me, don’t you?”
“If I were a tease, I’d walk out of this bathtub.”
“I dare you to try.” With a sigh, I pretended to get up but as expected, he pulled me down. “Hey… I was kidding. I’ll drown and die without you.”
“Really?” I asked, my lips an inch away from his. He nodded. “Well, I guess I should stay.”
“Damn right.” He kissed me again and I readjusted myself over his body so I could rest my head against his chest. I closed my eyes, smiling to the movement of his fingers on my thighs.
We sat there for a while, the background music soothing my psycho brain. I was smiling as his fingers pressed at my temples.
“I love you, Zayn.”
“I know. What did Liam say?”
“Not much. I’m a bit disappointed though because he’s doing his residency at a local clinic, not far from the hospital, but still–”
“Ah, he won’t be learning under the charming and handsome Dr. Brent, I see.”
“I think you’re jealous.”
“Your insistence is making me realize that maybe I should be jealous? Interesting…”
“You know Zayn, you never told me anything about Hiba. Who is she? How do you know her?”
“Oh, Hiba. Er, she’s um. Okay, I really – er, it’s not a big deal.”
“Not a big deal? Interesting…”
