After an accident it was obvious you were going to lose your leg. The team were in distress about it, you were only young and now you would lose a leg because they had fucked up a mission.
But, they had the best genius in the world on their side.
Bucky stood beside Tony as they watched you rest, a new metal leg attached to what was left of your flesh one.
'Shouldn't we have asked her first?' he said. Tony sighed and glances at him.
'Trust me, I wish I could've. But, we had to act fast to attach the leg,' Tony said. Bucky looked at you in pity and nodded.
'I guess you're right,' he paused for a moment, 'did you have this leg lying around, how did you create it so fast?'
'Please, Barnes. It's me we're talking about.'
--
Bucky was by your side when you began to wake up, he wanted to be the one you saw when you woke up. After all he was the only one that knew about waking up with a missing limb. He squeezed your hand as you began to stir awake. Tony entered the room and stood by, ready to intervene if he needed to. You groaned in pain and squeezed Bucky's hand.
'Buck?' you said. Your voice was rough from not speaking for so long.
'I'm here, Y/N.'
You looked at him tiredly. Your body filled with a dull ache.
'What happened?'
'You were in an accident on a mission,' Tony said. You could see the nervousness in his eyes. You tried to move your legs but groaned softly.
'Y/N, just look at me, okay?' Bucky said. You nodded and kept your eyes on him.
'You were badly injured, your leg was injured beyond saving,' He said. You went pale and looked at him in fear, you went to lift the blanket up and Bucky stopped you.
'We made the decision to give you a prosthetic leg,' he pauses, looking into your eyes, 'I wish we could've asked you but we had to act fast.'
He slowly pulled the blanket up to reveal your metal prosthetic leg. You looked at it, your emotions unreadable to the two men in the room.
'You okay, doll?' Bucky asked. You looked at him and smiled, your expression unsure.
'I think so,' you muttered, taking a pause, 'it'll just take some getting used to.'
Tony nodded a little, offering you a soft smile.
'And hey, least you have the idiot beside you to coach you on having a metal limb,' Tony said. You chuckled softly and looked at Bucky.
'I'll help you every step of the way.'
--
You had began learning to walk on your new leg. It was hard, trying to retrain your brain to rely on something that wasn't apart of it.
Bucky found you in your room sitting in front of the mirror.
'Hey, kiddo,' he said. He sat beside you on your bed.
'It just feels...wrong,' you whispered. Bucky looked at you sadly.
'It will for some time,' he said. He paused and gently held your hand, 'I found that giving it a different meaning helped. I stopped seeing my arm as something of destruction and instead I see it as a reminder of everything I've survived.'
You ran your thumb over his metal hand.
'Had to be the leg I had my tattoo on too, didn't just lose my leg lost a hundred dollar tattoo too,' you said trying to lighten the mood. Bucky chuckled and shook his head.
'Just the cherry on top,' he said squeezing your hand gently.
'So, instead of seeing your leg as something that went wrong or something you're missing, what are you going to see it as instead?'
You looked down at your prosthetic leg, deep in thought.
'I guess, a reminder that no matter what my team...my family is ready to do whatever is necessary to save me,' you said. Bucky smiled softly.
'I think that's a great way to see it, doll.'
