Chapter 63
Thursday November 30th
Mallory's POV

"He got really lucky" Mason looked at me, speaking quietly so that we didn't disturb his slumber. He needed to rest, and I would feel awful if our discussion prevented that from continuing. I wanted to be respectful, but I also wanted to make sure he was okay.

"What did Dr. Evans say?" I asked him, frowning a bit at Ezra laying there in the hospital bed.

"So he has a small orbital fracture, but Tan and Evans both confirmed that it should heal all on it's own. The swelling will last a week, same with the black eye. He's also concussed, considering the speed the ball went flying towards him and when he fell and hit his head on the ground... but that's honestly optimal for what it could have been instead" Mason explained to me.

"That is lucky" I murmured, thinking about all of the other complications that could have arisen. Even though Ezra is going to be in a bit of pain and distress for the next week or so, the good news is that he shouldn't need surgery, and there doesn't appear to be long term effects. "Did you just get here?"

"Like an hour ago" Mason shrugged.

"Well I'm glad he's okay" I stated, setting down the vase that I had brought with me. It was handpicked flowers from the outside of Veronica's apartment, which is where I got the vase from in the first place. It wasn't much, because I'm still living in my car on an intern's salary, but it felt wrong to show up with nothing. Ezra has always been a kind mentor, colleague, and person to me since the day that I started working here. This was the bare minimum of how I could repay him.

"Me too, but I wonder who is going to clap their hands and tell us our assignments this morning" Mason cracked a joke, in typical Mason fashion.

"We'll probably just report to another senior resident, it's only a few days" I chuckled. He'd likely want to get back to work as soon as possible, Ezra just seems like that type of person. He'd rest for the minimum amount of time Dr. Boden is requiring before he is clear for surgery, and then we'd be back to business as usual. Although, even if it's a short amount of time, it will feel different being under the supervision of another doctor.

"True" Mason shrugged his shoulders and agreed with me. I slowly began to make my way to the door so that I could drop off my bag in the locker room. Ezra wasn't awake at this time, and he'd see that I had stopped by due to the get well card on my flowers.

"Coming?" I turned the handle, looking at Mason.

"Oh yeah" Mason answered, grabbing his stuff off the floor from a corner of Ezra's room. We waved goodbye, even though our mentor was still sleeping in the white hospital bed, it felt weird to leave without it.

We waited by the elevator until it came to our floor, and then we stepped inside the empty space. I guess many people weren't wandering around at this time, it was pretty early, but the hospital truly never sleeps.

"So I guess the baseball game came back inconclusive?" Mason made conversation. Of course, after Ezra's medical emergency, the game was put to an end. Max, Harry, and Boden all transported Ezra back to the hospital and the Chief insisted the rest of us go home and get a night of sleep if we weren't on call.

"Well the attendings were in the lead, so it likely goes to them" I said disappointedly, hitching my bag up higher on my shoulder.

Mason rolled his eyes in annoyance. "How did they even win? They're like double our age"

I tried not to laugh, but it was slightly hard not to. "Well they have been playing as a team longer than ours"

"Ugh" He groaned, motioning for me to walk out of the elevator first.
