Chapter 31
Monday October 9th
Harry's POV

I walked alongside my little Stevie, holding her tiny hand in mine, in the fresh air. Stevie has been feeling back to her normal self, well as much as what could be considered these days, for the last few days. As her dad, it made me incredibly happy, but I knew the process would reset once she receives her next chemo treatment in 10 days.

For now though, I wanted to get my little girl outside from being cooped up in her hospital room. Technically speaking, during this phase of her treatment, Stevie is free to be at home. She would be expected to make trips to the hospital for blood draws and spinal taps etc, as well as stay overnight when she gets her next round of chemo. However, I just don't see how it would work.

Bonnie stays home all day, besides the constant trips she makes to have lunch with her friends, so realistically she should be able to take care of our daughter. Yet she won't. She has never flat out said no, but I know that it would not work. She would hate that her current freedom would be ripped from her if she had to be home with Stevie, and I just don't see it ending well. She won't even come visit her for a few hours and I'm supposed to feel safe leaving Stevie home alone with her?

I would love for Stevie to be home. Out of these bland walls that I personally tried to make fun for the kids and back in her own bedroom is where Stevie should be recovering. I knew that, but with my work schedule and Bonnie's unwillingness, it just doesn't work out. I would never be home enough to properly care for Stevie the way she deserves.

And selfishly, I like having her so close. I like being able to pop into her room whenever I want if I need a smile or a break. I like knowing that she is always in the same building as me should she need me in an emergency. I feel good knowing she's in a place full of people who can help her if needed. In a job like mine where my days are so hectic and unpredictable, I like to know that she is safe.

I don't think I would be able to work with a clear head if I was always worried about Stevie at home with her mother. Too many things could go wrong and not even just from Bonnie being a lackluster mother. Stevie's cancer could attack her hard one day and Bonnie just wouldn't know how to help because she lacks medical knowledge. That's why I like knowing she's here, where I can help her.

Despite all of that, I do feel bad that she is stuck in her room, so I take her outside whenever I can. It was about 9 am now and Stevie had just woken up for the day. I luckily didn't have any cases at the moment that needed me, so I'm able to spend some quality time with my daughter.

"What breakfast do you want Vie?" I looked down at her with a smile, swinging our hands back and forth gently.

"Uhm" She thought. "Pancakes"

"Good choice" I complimented, walking us inside the cafeteria. I led her over to the breakfast portion, grabbing two boxes of fresh pancakes, as well as a cup of fruit for us to share. I swiped my ID card at the cash register, and held the food and Stevie's hand in mine to take us back outside.

We sat down next to one another at one of the picnic tables and I got her breakfast all situated. I loved seeing her eyes light up when she took her first bite of her meal, she loves these pancakes. Honestly, they were pretty good for hospital food.

I looked away from my smiley girl to check a message on my phone, happy to see that it wasn't someone paging me away from her. Although I had to suppress my groan when I saw who it actually was. My wife.

I read her message that told me she would be landing around 4 and would be at the hospital as soon as New York traffic allowed her to be. I wrote her back telling her that Stevie will be really happy to see her and then set my phone down.
