My birthday chapter slay

Chapter 75
Wednesday December 13th
Mallory's POV

Today's the day.

After being surrounded by the same blank walls for the last few days, I was finally getting to leave the hospital. I couldn't believe it when Max told me that I was ready to head home, well, whatever home could be considered now. Although it was still hard to sit with the fact that my one true home was gone, I just had to be optimistic about where this new chapter of life would take me.

Mason is one of my best friends, an anchor throughout this very difficult and wary time in my life. Everything that I could ever need since I've woken up, he's had no hesitations to get it for me. He's kept me company this entire time, helping to distract my mind with his sarcastic comments and unbeatable sense of humor. He didn't waste any time offering up a spare room for me to lay my head, and take on the challenges that would come with it as I continued to recover outside the medical center. I couldn't be more grateful to him for allowing this to happen, even if my stomach still tensed with guilt whenever it was mentioned.

There was still going to be some things we had to figure out about this new arrangement, but Mason was insistent on just worrying about it at a later time. He kept repeatedly telling me that it really was no bother to him at all, and I had to just try and accept that.

I looked around the room at my limited amount of stuff, there truly wasn't much that I was going to be bringing with me, because everything I owned was stolen right out from under me. I only had the bare minimum, which consisted of some clothes Veronica was giving to me and a select amount of toiletries. There was nothing sentimental, no random notes from my friends or things I've collected from the pediatric kids. It all felt invaluable, since there was no history behind it.

I sighed, the hole in my heart feeling like it was being ripped open yet again. It was like one step forward and two steps back each time that I thought I was doing better, and being discharged was bringing up a ton of mixed emotions. Sometimes I just felt like I didn't know where to go from here.

On the table next to me, my phone lit up and I glanced over at it, seeing that it was a text from Mason letting me know that he was on his way back up. He went downstairs a few minutes ago to move his car closer to the building, so that we wouldn't have to go so far. It was also his way of telling me to be ready, so I got on that.

I ran my brush through my hair, doing a bit to appear more presentable, before throwing it into the duffel bag. Everything that I needed was now prepared and ready to go, the suns that Harry had taped to my ceiling were safely packed away as well, and I already had plans to restore them in my new room if Mason was okay with it.

I also threw on a jacket, seeing that it was cold outside, and I didn't want to have myself stuck out there again with nothing. There was only a short amount of time that I was there before passing out, my body shivering from the fear and winter air surrounding me all at once. As my brain redrew the memory, my throat dried, and I quickly bundled myself up to try and make the feeling go away.

"Ready to go Mal?" Mason joined me momentarily, poking his head in the door, his car keys dangling between his fingers. There was a nurse following right behind him with a wheelchair, it being the easiest way to get me to the vehicle. Even though my walking has improved a lot, which was a good sign.

"Y-yeah" I answered, which prompted him to fully enter the room.

"Let me get your bag" He threw it over his shoulder and then immediately went to assist me with transferring from the bed. They both supported me, but let me do most of the work so I could continue weaning away from being fully reliant on someone, and then we were pretty much ready to go. "Got everything?"
