Chapter 29
Thursday October 5th
Harry's POV

I spent the morning back on the twin's liver case.

I got paired with Dr. Lin today, as it was easiest to keep the intern that had already been working on it involved. She and I continued our operation from yesterday, calling and trying to find a second donor, and everything. I was coming up at a loss comparing the two tumors and tests, as each one was a tie. It was a dead end.

There was no way I was going to be able to decide who gets the liver like this.

"Yes I'm aware I've already called this morning" I snapped into the phone. I was tired of listening to their voices as much as they were listening to mine. "I need a donor for this baby"

I had a plan B. As a surgeon, I always prepared for the worst and made a back up plan. If plan B fails, I move to plan C and so on. I prepare as much as possible that a surgeon can, because I don't like surprises. So even though the tests are a complete and utter foolery, I had a second way to determine who is getting the liver.

Of course, I was still trying to avoid that as much as possible, which is how I've ended up on the phone with Kelsey for the 13th time this morning. While monitoring the babies, I was going to delay plan B as much as possible, in hopes that holding off would magically make a liver appear. I knew it was a long shot, so I was also being realistic in knowing that my time this morning was limited.

"Would you like to pick which baby dies Kelsey?" I barked. "No, I didn't think so! So call me back with some good news"

I slammed the phone down onto the receiver, already pissed off an hour and a half into my shift. It was too early to be dealing with this bullshit.

"If we don't find a donor, one of them will die today?" Dr. Lin looked at me.

I nodded solemnly. "I don't think they'd make it to tomorrow"

"I didn't sign up to watch babies die" She muttered, leaning on the desk and putting her head in her hands. Ah, the good ole intern moping session. Dr. Herrera is better equipped for this than I am.

"Really? Because that's exactly why I signed up" I said sarcastically. Of course nobody fucking signed up to watch children die.

Have I mentioned how much I fucking hate interns?

"We have to find this organ today"

I waved a finger at her. "You have really solved the case Sherlock"

More time went by with nothing getting accomplished. I got nowhere with the exams on the babies and now I was getting nowhere with the donor. I actually felt like I was at a loss and I didn't know what to do about it.

Even more so when my last check up on the babies told me that I couldn't wait any longer.

I had to move to plan B.

"Stacy, John. This is Dr. Boden, I have asked him to perform your operation to remove the lobe of your liver for donation"

Dr. Boden, Herrera, Lin, and I all stood in the NICU in front of the two nervous parents, each on one side of the incubators that the twins were in. They looked at me listening to what I was saying, hanging on to every word with hopes that I had come with good news.

News that I didn't have.

"Okay. W-which one of them is going to get it?" John asked, glancing between his son and daughter.
