That morning, the sky burned a hazy blood red color. A misty haze settled upon the atmosphere, thick like it was the blood of the unfortunate ones who did not survive the end of the world.
It was the moment that Chan decided to escape with the one last important thing of his life. The morning at the facility started off like every other one, with him trapped cramped in a cage, gnawing at the bars with his sharp teeth and still unable to penetrate them even in his wolf form. At least he got the luxury of a larger cage so that he could transform from human to wolf freely.
Hyunjin was not so lucky. His small ferret form could easily escape through the bars of the enclosure, so he was forced into a smaller one- one that Chan's hand could get stuck inside. It was rare these days that he got to see Hyunjin in his actual human form except for when the guards were dragging him to and from his cell.
He was beautiful- had long dark hair and thick plump lips. Even malnourished with jutting clavicles and the multiple scars from experiments, he was the jewel in Chan's eyes. The thing that kept him going even though the rest of the world crumbled underneath him.
Hyunjin was always taken away at dawn, woken up harshly for his experiments. They reached into the cage to rudely grab him and wake him up, and despite his best efforts to hiss and bite at the hands, there was only so much that a small weasel could do against genetically modified humans. Brainwashed humans.
They poked him with a cattle prod and forced him to the ground to painfully morph into a human. His chest heaved and his spine jutted out as he lay bare and shivering on the floor from the electrical shocks. They didn't give him any time to recover as they dragged him away. Chan's voice was ragged and hoarse from shouting at the guards, and then howling when he became agitated and shifted.
Chan was taken away shortly after lunchtime. Just like always. Hyunjin was usually always back by the time he returned, but this time was different.
After they shaved Hyunjin's hair and left him beaten and bloodied on the floor, hardly able to move, Chan decided that it was time for them to escape.
They left the facility that very night and didn't dare look back.
Now, a month after escaping, winter was upon them, and it was heavy. The first winter since the apocalypse was unforgiving, and now Chan knew that they must have been somewhere in the north because the south didn't have cold like this. It didn't ice over lakes and claim lives with hypothermia.
Not that things like north and south really mattered anymore- just the road before them and the demons behind them.
Now, ashes mingled in the sky with the snow, the two almost indistinguishable from one another with the exception of texture. When snow fell on Chan's snout- it was cold and unforgiving. When it was ash- it flaked away and made him sneeze. Chan didn't have a preference- he didn't like either.
He was shifted and his large paws left imprints in the snow below that would probably be covered by the coming night's snowfall, so he wasn't worried about the facility tracking them. They had been running all day, after all. No one should find them here.
They scouted out a secluded warehouse that was well sheltered, a rare structure that was still standing upright, withered by the world around it. The perfect shelter. Hyunjin had done his job and collected water for them at the nearby stream- he had to dig below frozen over ice to get it- and now it was Chan's turn to bring something to the table.
