The End of Time - Part Three of Part One.

- ~ -

When he was sure that Wilf had seen him from his window, the Doctor turned hastily towards Lynnette. This was perilous, he knew, but Wilf was the one who'd sought him out, the one who'd known something else was wrong when no one else did.

Lynnette blinked slowly as the Doctor came closer. She seemed content in a way, but the savage glint in her eyes remained all the same. There was no venom in her stance as he stood by her side, no caution, only stillness. The Doctor was glad. Progress.

Abruptly, she righted herself, gaze narrowed ever so slightly.

The Doctor heard shuffling. Wilf's footsteps on the gravel of the road. The old man had confusion written plain across his face, worry harrowing the crow's feet around his eyes, pulling down the wrinkles on his forehead.

Words spilt from the Doctor's throat, "I lost him. I was unconscious. Lynnette saved me. He's still on Earth, but he's too far away."

Wilf furrowed his brows, eyes flickering to Lynnette and landing on the vibrant blue police box, "You can't park there! What if Donna sees you?"

The Doctor knew it was dangerous, but he needed Wilf's insight. He needed a lead, or Donna would still die, just like everyone else on Earth. He almost wanted to scream. Why couldn't this planet just stay out of trouble? Why couldn't it stay peaceful for once in its billions of years old existence?

Lynnette shifted from behind the Doctor. Her body was only a step behind his, her hands close enough to clutch his jacket and yank him back into her. He wondered what Lynnetet thought of Wilf. Did she recognise him? See him as a potential threat? He couldn't tell anything when she was behind him like a ghost that haunted.

The Doctor stared at Wilf, trying to discern what was so important about this ordinary, frail man, "You're the only one, the only connection I can think of, you're involved, if I could somehow work out..." He lunged forward to grasp Wilf's arms, "Tell me, have you seen anything, I don't know, anything strange, anything odd?"

"Well, there was..." He paused.

"What is it? Tell me?" The Time Lord had no time for hesitation. He had no time for certainty; no, he had to find the Master as quickly as he could with any lead he could. He was desperate. He needed to find the Master. He needed to find him and keep him close so he couldn't hurt anyone else.

"Well, there was..." For a moment, Wilf seemed ready to spill everything, but then his eyes dulled and he looked away, "No, it's nothing."

The Doctor opened his mouth, but Lynnette was already there. Her burning stare into Wilf's. They were hollow again. Cold and calculating, the perfect poker face. Wilf flinched at her sudden closeness, shrinking beneath the unflinching scrutiny of the woman who had once been so warm to him. He was cracking, intimidated beneath Lynnette's steely gaze.
