chapter fifty-nine — no surprises
𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:

There were no words to explain the overwhelming feeling that suffocated my body; a dull ache sat in my chest, and no amount of deep breaths could take that away. It felt like I was losing her all over again every time there was an anniversary or a memorial, and it was sickening.

I sat at the back alongside Olivia among many people, some of whom I was familiar with and others who made me question if they really knew my mother at all. I bounced my leg up and down nervously as I tried to listen to Jeremiah's speech; however, I felt myself zoning in and out, too many thoughts swirling around my brain to concentrate.

"She would've loved to be here on a day like this." His words echoed through the microphone, my body tensing at the thought of her being here to see it all.

The garden truly did look breathtaking; I knew my mom would've approved. Flowers were blossoming everywhere you turned, bright blues and pinks littered the bushes.

"Anyone you loved was family, and anyone who loved you." I glanced up at Jere, seeing him turn his gaze to Belly, a warm smile on his face as he did so.

I felt a hand on my thigh, my head turning slowly to see a small smile on Liv's face. I placed my hand over the top of hers, squeezing it softly to show my acknowledgement of the gesture. She wore a beautiful blue dress, especially for my mom.

Suddenly, everyone was clapping, and that's when I realised the speech had finished. I stood up quickly, along with everyone else and applauded my brother for his speech.

I felt a sense of pride towards him for delivering the speech; he didn't have my help, and I wasn't by his side to deliver it with him. I had let him down- again

Everyone had started to scatter from their seats, allowing us to finally greet everyone. I took Liv's hand in mine as we made our way over to the group that was starting to form. I locked eyes with my brother, his face lifting into a smile as I raised a small hand.

"I can't believe you both made it, I-we thought you weren't coming," Jere admitted, pulling me into a hug as Olivia greeted her mom and Oakley.

It wasn't long before my own father was pulling me into a hug, a rough pat on my back, paired with his infamous grin, "Out there saving lives and still got time for family."

"Relax, Dad, I'm not a doctor yet." I gritted my teeth, my hands falling into my pockets as I glanced at Liv, yet she avoided my gaze.
