In the following couple of days, Eclipse's intake of nutrients had increased, and their ability to accept food did too. While not much, it was still something, and you were proud of that. It helped that you spoke to the doctor about what Eclipse prefers to eat, which consisted of less liquids (no more broth, no matter how high in protein it was), and more dry foods (like organic crackers, nuts and grains, and fruits).
Yogurt seemed like the ultimate choice, and so varied fruits were added to give it more calories. They were advised to drink water, at least a little, even if the PICC supplied hydration—the doctor wanted their digestive tract to get back to work properly. A little coaxing usually has them drink a bit.
You helped them eat once or twice, as they asked, and were glad to be of help. It also gave your mind an escape from the horrors that kept repeating in your head. What they had confessed so out of body, partially detached, will keep following you to the unforeseeable future, and any distraction will help.
They had their blood drawn multiple times, too, and that had Eclipse feeling less than good—teary-eyed sometimes, and other times glaring at the wall as they tried to hide the tremors in their shoulders. It broke your heart, and so you decided to address this to the doctor as well. They had a double PICC inserted already, and to have them be able to draw blood easily will require a triple PICC so they won't have to be poked with a needle two to even three times a day. You couldn't take another moment with them scared like that, especially when they happen to be regressed. That had led to removing the catheter already in use for parenteral nutrition and then preparing Eclipse to get a different one.
That procedure was not a comforting one, having to insert a tube all the way to the heart. The first one was done while they were unconscious, but now they could feel everything. In the end, they now have a triple peripherally inserted central catheter, aka a PICC; that won't only allow for nutrients and fluids, but also blood draws with no needle picks.
You were also thinking of finishing a few things, mainly to go have a "chitchat" with a certain company to sort out a few files. You needed to shower and to go buy a few things that you had planned. All of this will take half of the day off, and the problem came when you realized Eclipse will not be happy about that.
They have expressed (unbeknownst, mostly) the fear of being left alone in a place where they knew no one. In the three days they have been fully awake now, they were glued to you, and the first time you needed to talk to the doctor they had looked completely like a kicked puppy, pretending that it was fine even while they began to shake and their hands gripping at the sheets. You think it either has something to do with being in solitary confinement for long, or because they feared something would happen if you were separated (to you or to them). Either way, you had to think of something regarding this.
Separation anxiety was another thing you ended up searching while they napped, and while they may or may not have it, they were showing the signs, and you needed to help with that.
An idea came to you the night before to get someone they knew in your place so you could go out and get things done. You also planned to tell them exactly what you were going to do, and promise that if they wanted to call you throughout any second of the day, they could.
It is the early morning, somewhere around five-thirty when you woke up, cuddled up next to the other on the bed. In half an hour, their breakfast will be here. You'll tell them after they have eaten.
Right now, you were chatting with Roxanne, the chosen person to be the first (after you) to see them. While you weren't technically friends, you still owed her more or less your life, and she was a good person if you looked past the sass. Not to mention, she was someone they knew for a long while, even before you, and so, she seemed like a good choice. A confident person who had a soft spot for them... she'll do good to keep them from feeling too anxious. Hopefully.
