You come back to the table after having schooled your expressions, maintaining a calm posture to not ruin Sun's breakfast—you'll have to tell him eventually, but for now, he can eat in peace.
Sun doesn't ask about the call—you get some calls from work occasionally and he knew that, and so he probably thinks it is just another boring call. Even then, he won't ask about something he believes he has no right nosing about.
As he'd promised, he left you some strawberry smoothie, and you thanked him with a smile, pouring yourself a bit before giving him the last bit in the jar to fill his empty cup.
When breakfast is done, you offer to go sit in the backyard. It has been a while since Sun had seen his flowers. Amelia had been taking care of them while you were away, thankfully, and so his beloved flowers were still thriving.
Sun's smile is bright exactly like the light pouring through the clouds, crispy morning air ruffling his curls. He crouches down to inspect his flowers, touching the petals lightly and taking a sniff of the wonderful aroma they emit.
You feel your heart ache, not wanting to ruin their day at something that seemed utterly meaningless—that man deserves death and more, his sickness is inconsequential. Not even for a billion dollars would you ever feel sympathy for him.
But whether you feel bad for him or not isn't the point here.
You move to sit beside your smaller beloved, taking in the well-cared-for plants for a moment as you gather your thoughts. There was no way to sugarcoat this, nor a way to make it easier.
"Sweetie, I wanted to talk to you about something," you begin softly, willing yourself to offer as much support and love as possible to not frighten the other.
Alas, though, Sun still looks at you like a deer in the headlights. He eases from his crouched position to sit fully on the grass. "Yeah?"
Even in his goddamn sickness, that man still has an impact on them. Still frightening them even when he isn't around.
It sickened you—made familiar ire fill your chest and burn at you.
"Bonnie called me earlier," you say carefully, watching as Sun's eyes widen briefly. He knew that Bonnie would be their ticket to defeating that monster. "He had some news to tell about your abuser."
Sun's demeanor closes off slightly, unease filling their bones as their shoulders rise to hide their neck subconsciously. He mumbles uncertainly, "What did he say?"
You take a breath, and then, "That man is in critical condition. He may not survive."
Sun freezes, eyes unfocusing as he processes the news. You can see as his face twitches into different emotions—from disbelief to despair to something a bit harder to understand.
Sun didn't look like he knew how to react, mouth opening and closing before settling on a deep frown, one that pulled at his lips and eyebrows and did not fit his face well.
He takes a breath as if to say something, then pauses, then quietly asks, "If he dies... are they going to neutralize us?"
"N—Neutralize?" You blink in shock, shaking your head frantically as if to both banish the image the word brought and to show them how that was not it. "No! No. It doesn't matter what happens to him because it won't affect you—Bonnie confirmed that. You are a victim of what he's done, and what you did was out of self-defense."
Confusion crosses Sun's face as if he didn't really believe you, and that has your heart jumping, yelling that he needed to know the truth and not get swallowed in the fear of possible death.
