Battle of Mashel Fields
Across the field the grim odor of death, despair, and desperation permeated the ground to the sky. Everywhere one looked, sights of hate filled faces, pain, depression, and insanity were plentiful. The battle was entering its final stage and everyone knew it.
"Your Majesty, our wyverns have been defeated, we're exposed!"
"This battle is truly lost then. We must retreat and force a siege at the capital. Men, I order a full retreat to Meremusnia! Where is the prince he should be back by now!" King Malsockal ll rode along his battle lines but couldn't find his son anywhere.
"Your Majesty, Prince Zin is pinned down with his unit under gun fire!"
"I will go and relieve the prince, in the meantime I need you, General Jamison, to move the retreat along."
"I can't allow that sir, I will save the prince. If Reglacus is to survive this war you must survive it as well." The king stared down his friend with determination. He knew it was the correct course of action but this time of all time he just couldn't.
"I'm sorry Jamison but as a father, not a king, I must go, I would die of guilt if I didn't." With that the king and some cavalry rode off to rejoin the battle. Jamison clenched his fist and prayed as he continued to organize the retreat.
Bullets seemed to rain down as Prince Zin and his men took cover behind some wooded walls and dead horse and wyvern bodies. Only Prince Zin and his captain had guns of their own. They were running out of bullets fast and the enemy only kept growing in size.
"Your Highness you alone must escape, the rest of us are not making it out. I understand you don't want that but it's just the way of things." Zin gritted his teeth in hatred and frustration. It was unfair, why did this have to happen?
"Captain it's the king, he's coming!" The king and his cavalry blitzed toward the prince and his men. When the enemy soldiers noticed they immediately opened fire killing many of the leading men.
"Cover the prince, show these backstabbing Merhoffen bastards your battle skills!" The king's cavalry quickly filled the front line of the enemy with arrows and bullets. Zin and his men were quickly given horses while 2 magic users fired off a few spells before both of them cast fog spells to cover their escape.
"Father, what is our next move?" Zin shouted. As they talked bullets started flying past them as the enemy recovered.
"The only correct one, a retreat to Meremusnia!"
Not long after the fog began dissipating, the Merhoffen cavalry began running them down, each rider wanting to claim the glory of killing or capturing enemy royalty. The prince and king were making great time back to the main force but the men defending them were dying at an equally quick pace. As the chase continued and more guards were killed off by the superior Parapaldian firearms the remaining knights defended the king and prince like wild animals. Tragedy would wear the face of exhaustion this time. As the Reglacus soldiers' numbers began to reach critical numbers Prince Zin's horse, tired from its previous deployments and foaming at the mouth, began falling behind. Just as the king and his knights began to react their pursuers seized tey moment and pilled four cold tears of death into Crown Prince Zin's back. As the prince and his horse fell to the foul muddy ground the remaining knights with a clear head forcefully dragged his highness onward in order to at least still save him. His shouts of hatred and sorrow announced the terrible news to the retreating army. Seeing the approaching reception forces the attacking cavalry elected to disengage and report their victory.
The retreat back to the capital was hasty and harsh, every couple of days they had to fend off small harassment forces that would sap them of their strength. The siege of Meremusnia was a similarly brutal affair. The defenders managed to hold out for a year and a half, but after reaching a critically low level of supplies and the two failed relief attacks the Kingdom of Reglacus was forced to surrender to the combined front of the Parapaldian Empire and, their previously inoffensive neighbors, the Merhoffen Kingdom. While Reglacus did lose land, people, and money nothing hurt the nation as a whole more than the embarrassment of the loss to the Merhoffens who willing defection to the hated Parapaldian Empire. Though for King Malsockal ll it was only compounded by the death of his son, by the fearsome Parapaldian rifles.
