"Yeah these guys are super chill. Love hanging with 'em." He said, draping his arm around my shoulder and pulling me in for a side hug.

I smiled dumbly and let him take me in. He turned the knob and kicked open the door.

"Pretty sure I got the happiest girl alive right here next to me, and it's hella contagious." He called, casually walking in with me still draped under his arm.

I scanned the room, eyeing two boys. One with auburn hair and rectangular glasses and the other had shaggy dark hair and a round-ish face.

"Awesome, we dig happiness around here. Daniel." The one with auburn hair introduced, sticking his hand out.

I placed my hand in his and shook it.
"(Y/n)."

"And I'm Ryan." The other one smiled, taking my hand as well.

"Well it's nice to meet you both." I smiled

"We were about to start a game of cards, any game preferences?" Daniel asked.

"I don't mind. I'm down with whatever." I said cheerfully.

Ryan went back to get a deck of cards while Abel made me a drink. I sat at a wooden dining table next to Daniel as he refreshed me on the rules of 2-22.

"You know this party is missing some music, you guys got a speaker?" I asked

"Yep!" Ryan called from the hallway.

Ryan came into view with a deck of cards and a speaker under his arm.

"Sweet." I said

He plugged his phone in and started to play his playlist. It was full of really good old-school tunes.

"Hey what happened to Mark?" Abel called from the kitchen.

His name caught me off guard, Abel's words bouncing around in my head. I almost laughed at my ridiculous thought. It couldn't possibly be the Mark I used to know.

"He's in the bathroom." Ryan stated, sitting a chair away from me at the table.

"Is he playing?" Abel asked

"I think so." Daniel answered

Almost as if on que, the sound of a door opening was heard under the noise of the music. I payed zero attention to it as Daniel started to deal out cards.

"Gotta warn you guys I'm pretty good at this game." I said proudly, taking a peek at my cards.

"Oh are ya now?" Abel laughed placing a drink in front of me and sitting in the seat next to mine.

"I'd be willing to bet money if I had any on me right now." I snickered

"Mark? You alright dude?" Daniel asked, staring directly behind me.

I shifted in my seat turning to see-in my surprise- the Mark that I'd thought I'd never see again. He stared at me dumbfounded, his eyes a much duller brown than the last time I had seen them. He looked a little skinnier and the underside of his eyes were a dark bluish-grey.

"Do you guys-?" Ryan started and then stopped.

"Hey Mark." I said over the speaker.

He just stood there and stared as if I was some UFO that happened to fly over the sky. Daniel got up from his seat and walked over to Mark, gently pushing him into the hallway.

Abel leaned over and whispered into my ear. "You know him?"

"Yeah. Old friend."

"Hm. He seems a little off, don't you think?"

"Definitely not the Mark I remember." I replied with a small chuckle.

Mark's P.O.V

Fate was a weird, weird thing. How she was placed right in front of me the day I arrived, was a miracle. I couldn't tell you how lucky I felt. And the odd thing is, immediately after my eyes locked on the back of her head- my hands stopped shaking completely. It was like a drug withdrawal, and I finally got my fix.

"My hands..."

"What?" Daniel whispered after pulling me into the hallway.

"They stopped shaking."

"That's great Mark. So what's up? Do you know that chick or something?"

"Know that chick? She's the reason I came back to California, Daniel. It was to find her." I sputtered

"Are you being a sarcastic asshole right now?"

I smiled, a genuine smile which I haven't done in a long time. "No. I'm not joking."

"Well wow. Fate made it a hell of a lot easier for ya bud. But ah, looks like you'll have to pry Abel off her if you want her." He whispered gesturing back to the table.

Abel was leaned over, pressed to the side of (y/n)'s body, whispering something into her ear. She glanced at him and replied with that signature smile. He said something back and she responded once more followed by a small giggle. I began to feel scared. Scared that I was too late again and that (y/n) had already fallen for someone else. I couldn't blame her Abel was attractive for a guy. Curly hair, blue eyes, fit body. Who was I kidding? This was gonna be hell.

"You mentally stable enough to play?" Daniel said, smacking his hand on my back.

"Hell yeah."

"Woah ok. Let's do this then." He walked off and I followed behind him, sitting in a chair next to Ryan.

"You know, this game isn't really fun without money." (Y/n) interjected

"You're right." Abel agreed, a smug look plastered on his face.

"But I didn't bring any I don't think." She said, patting her pockets.

"I have a five. Daniel, Ryan you guys got change for a five?" Abel asked

"Yeah got a whole bucket full of quarters. I guess we can throw a little money into this." Ryan smiled, taking a swig of his beer before getting out of his chair.

"I've only ever played with money. That's all I know." (Y/n) smiled, and took another sip of her drink.

I was curious as to what was in her glass. But I didn't ask, instead I stared at the table like an idiot, twiddling my thumbs.
Ryan returned with a large bucket of quarters.

"I'll pay you back." (Y/n) said to Abel as he handed Ryan his five dollar bill.

"Don't worry about it."

He grinned at her and handed her $3 dollars worth of quarters, giving himself the other $2.

Daniel just took from the bucket, but I searched through my wallet and found a one. I traded it for four quarters.

"Alright we're ready. Let's do this."
