Fireworks

It was July 4th, at night. It had to be, with the fireworks bursting in the night sky, pronouncing themselves with bold reds, whites, and blues. The stars were briefly joined by crackling showers of light, before dissolving into shimmering sparkles that disappeared into the darkness. Everyone's eyes were fixated on the show, and they had secured a spot on a hill from which they could see with little obstruction. As expected, it was a hot night, with humming cicadas and still air. Snacks and plenty of water were brought along with their foldable chairs.

Sometime during the few hours they were up there, he absconded from his family and their friends sitting and watching the fireworks, chatting amongst themselves or entertaining the little ones. Their chatter became distant, though the explosions of fireworks still rang in his ears.

And as expected, his escape didn't go completely unnoticed. Moments later, dry grass crunching beneath someone's shoes grabbed his attention. Wearing a slightly worn blue cap and a button down shirt with pants even in the middle of summer, was his best friend. Always alert for trouble and misbehavior, and he was known to be a little rowdy. Sneaking off without his parents' permission was just one of his childish misdemeanors.

He said something about it being dangerous to wander off in the middle of the night. His response was that they weren't really that far. They could call out and be easily heard if something were to happen.

At some point, his friend sat down next to him, arms around his knees. He himself was laying on the grass, spreading his arms and legs like he was making a snow angel as the grass scratched at his skin. The fireworks above peppered his vision with sparks. They talked and listened as the fireworks endlessly whizzed and popped above their heads, exploding into stars and lights. They were too far away from the source to catch the resulting smoke, but could get a phantom whiff of it if they tried hard enough.

He can't exactly recall what they talked about. It was too long ago. But he remembers having a good time. He remembers laughing and pointing out the biggest fireworks. The blue fireworks made his eyes brighter and bluer than they already were. They watched as the trees and grass lit up, changing color in synchrony with each firework as they burst. He knows they smiled together.

But he can't recall what his smile looked like. It was too long ago.

DUDE I THOUGHT I LOST THIS PIECE TO THE ETHER HOLY SHIT

Okay so this is from Creative Writing Club (not the class) in HS and I wrote this in docs in my school account. We had to print copies to share with everyone. I've lost that account since I've graduated and I thought I recycled all the physical copies BUT I've been going thru old papers AND I FOUND IT.

This is HEAVILY based off Illusion Shift LMAO surprise OI content. So this is Oreo and Ph when they were littler and uhhhhh I think the piece just kinda explains itself ^_^ #nolstagia. The pronouns get a little confusing though lwk my ass wanted to be mysterious plus I couldn't think of good human names for them at the time ig??? But if you know the characters, who's who should be clear enough.

Okay I think that's it byeeeee ^_^
