Somewhere in the Black Castle Range, Sheba Province, Central Holy Milishial Empire
The door slammed shut beside her with a soft thud that cut the fierce mountain wind away in an instant.
Luger Lugh let out a long breath as she stepped deeper into the rear seat of the black-colored light armored vehicle, the sound fogging faintly in the air before the cabin's climate control swallowed the cold from her lungs. The vehicle's interior was compact but practical, with enough reinforced plating and thick ballistic glass to make the whole machine feel like a moving bunker shrunk down into something agile enough to climb frozen mountain roads. But it was currently the insulation that made Luger appreciate the ride even more.
She shrugged out of the worst of the cold immediately. Settling into one of the seats, Luger unfastened the front of her thick winter jacket and pulled it open, letting the trapped heat spill out. The relief was immediate. The coat had done its job against the mountain air, but after the dash from the staging point to the vehicle, the warmth now felt almost excessive in the insulated cabin. Her shoulders eased, and she leaned back for a moment, savoring the simple luxury of not having to fight the weather anymore.
Her gloved fingers moved to the inside seam of the jacket and opened it neatly, checking the status strip woven into the lining—an indicator glowing a calm blue-white amidst a slim lattice of enchanted fiber running through the garment itself, regulated automatically and drawing power so efficiently that the whole thing felt less like a piece of equipment and more like a normal coat.
'How very convenient...'
The magical temperature-adjustment technology in this country had advanced to an absurd degree. It was no longer something you wore on top of your clothes or strapped onto your torso like a life-support unit. Here in the Holy Milishial Empire, it had become seamless and integrated directly into winter gear, to the point that one could almost forget the system was there at all. Compared to what she had seen elsewhere, the difference was almost laughable.
In the Annonrial Empire, portable thermal regulation units used by the military were still large things roughly the size of a chest plate, worn inside a plate carrier and doubling as armor by necessity. Effective, yes, but heavy, awkward, and impossible to forget for even a minute. Civilian models were worse: oversized systems carried on the back like some miniature field generator, their hoses and connectors hidden under winter cloaks in a way that fooled no one.
By the time everyone had boarded and the vehicle began moving, Luger's attention shifted away from her unusually sophisticated clothing and toward the world outside.
After passing through the mountain settlement of Uqbar, the aerial convoy had finally reached its destination, a military base bearing the name of JMSC Tenger Etseg. The 30-odd transport aircraft of various sizes and configurations had descended vertically onto the airfield, now lined up across the tarmac like a flock of great birds at rest. Some of the craft were already being emptied of their crates, but the real spectacle centered on a number of Pelicans and Condors bearing Holy Milishial Imperial Army identification markings, their broader and heavier cousins. Their rear ramps had been lowered onto the frozen concrete, and from the cavernous troop bays within, the Legionoids—those humanoid metal knight-birdmen things—were pouring out in steady files. One after another, then dozens after dozens, the Legionoids emerged from the transports in numbers that made it difficult to estimate how many had been packed into the convoy. They did not hesitate at the bottom of the ramps, nor did they pause to orient themselves. Each unit peeled off at exactly the right moment, fell into its assigned file, and marched toward the designated assembly zones with no visible deviation.
