Bruno always hated the parties that Passione would throw. They were far too stuffy for his tastes. Alas, his rank within the organization guaranteed him an invite, and refusing said invitation would come with consequences. Bruno knew it was better to attend and keep his head down, no matter how obnoxious the occasion.
He stays occupied by sipping red wine and greeting his colleagues with silent nods. He knows very few people at this event, truth be told. He typically keeps to himself and his crew. No one in this room even so much as catches his eye.
Well, that's not true. There is one person that's caught his eye.
He almost wants to laugh because the person he's interested in isn't even a part of the gang. Instead, they're a server employed by Passione to distribute food throughout the night. Bruno's eyes feel drawn to the stranger that's somehow oozing elegance in spite of their required, proper uniform. Their posture is straight and rehearsed, their manners careful. They're nearly invisible - it's what the job mandates.
But they aren't invisible to Bruno. You aren't invisible to Bruno.
You make your rounds through the crowded event hall, a silver platter poised atop your hand. The guests of the party pick at the food on your tray as you pass. It's a simple job, but it pays decently; especially on nights such as this one where you've been absolutely sworn to secrecy. Your signature on the Non-Disclosure Agreement seals your fate if you let even a word of tonight slip. You're a professional, though. You've mastered the art of completely tuning out what others are saying during these events.
Perhaps that's why you miss Bruno's attempt at first contact.
It's rare for Bruno to allow himself to engage in such frivolous pleasantries. Still, he gives himself grace. How else could he stomach this obnoxious evening?
"Excuse me," Bruno tries.
When you don't turn, his heart drops to his stomach. How embarrassing. He feels like giving up, but that's not how Bucciarati operates.
"Pardon me," Bruno repeats, this time a little louder. He accompanies his words with a raise of his hand in your direction. Hopefully he gets your attention now.
You startle slightly when Bruno speaks to you. Most people at these events view you and your fellow employees as mere objects, subhumans who were granted a purpose for the evening. It's cruel, but it's the way the world works. You benefit enough from the pay to ignore the dehumanizing aspects of your job.
"Yes, sir. May I help you?" You reply.
The man who commanded your attention is rather handsome, you note. His hair is long and cut into a bob that you never would have imagined on a man; still, it suits him. His eyes are a piercing shade of blue that contrasts nicely against his tanned complexion. You allow yourself to scan over his flushed cheeks and plump lips. He looks attractive enough to be a model.
"Might I trouble you for a glass of water?" The man asks.
Your job for the night was handing out hors d'oeuvres, but you've learned by now to fulfill any requests asked of you. You give him a curt nod. "Certainly, sir. One moment."
When you return, you've ditched the tray and are holding Bruno's requested water. He's polite enough to thank you. He's been polite in all his words. Every sentence from his mouth was kind. It was unusual, given the other clientele in the room.
