Learning to love

Tears traced quiet rivers down her cheeks as she searched his eyes.

"I messed up," she whispered. "I really did this time."

No, she didn't cheat on him, if that's what you're wondering.

She simply disappeared into silence, believing distance was the kindest gift she could give. She needed space, and he understood that. Understanding, however, has never made waiting any lighter.

You see, she'd never been loved like this before.

In many ways, she was still learning what love looked like.

She had read countless books. Stories of soulmates. Grand gestures. Perfect endings.

But no page can warm cold hands.

No chapter wraps its arms around you after a hard day.

No novel kisses your forehead or whispers, "You're safe. I'm here."

Books can comfort the heart for a while, but eventually the final page arrives, the cover closes, and reality is waiting outside the library doors.

She buried herself in work because work was predictable.

Work couldn't break her heart.

It distracted her just long enough to forget what she was running from.

He never feared being alone.

Loneliness had become an old acquaintance.

What terrified him was something else.

He feared she'd settle for less.

That someone would mistake her kindness for weakness.

That someone would admire her beauty without ever learning her soul.

That someone would borrow her heart for a night and leave it where they found it by morning.

Too many women had told him the same story.

"I let the good one get away because I was naïve."

"I thought real love only existed in fairy tales."

"I spent so much time trying to prove someone else wrong that I lost the person who was trying to love me right."

"God... I was so unbelievably stupid."

They all gave him the same advice.

"Tell her you love her."

"Tell her often."

"Show her in the smallest moments."

"Never let her question whether she's cherished."

He smiled, though it carried the weight of unanswered prayers.

"I do," he said.

"Every single day."

"I love her with my patience."

"I love her with my consistency."

"I love her in every message I choose to send with kindness instead of anger."

"I love her by giving her the space she asked for, even when every part of me wants to close the distance."

He looked toward the horizon, where hope and uncertainty blurred into the same color.

"But sometimes..."

His voice almost disappeared into the wind.

"...I wonder if she even knows."

"...If she even cares."

He closed his eyes for a moment, then smiled with quiet resolve.

"I can't become someone else just to be loved."

"I can only be myself."

"And if love is real..."

"Then maybe, one day..."

"She'll see that I never stopped choosing her."
