I felt the flurescent lights before I saw them hanging ominously from the ceiling and casting an annatractive glow on eveyone that so much as happened to step foot in the hospital. Hospital?
I gasped but failed to draw in air. If my weak arms hadn't clawed my torso to find it bare, I would have sworn a grown man was sitting on it. Everything was on fire and everything hurt. I gasped again and this time my eyes flew open, taking in my hazy environment. I was almost sertain somebody was screaming my name over and over again, but it didn't feel like me name.
When we were little Mike and I used to play a game during roadtrips. We used to look around the flashing senery, lockate an object and say its name over and over again until the word lost its meaning and all that was left was an ugly sound, remnant of what once had been something that mattered.
That's how I felt when Spencer, Spencer, screamed my name from across the room. Meaningless.
I closed my eyes again and this time it was easier to breathe. What had happened?
"...ria, please talk to me. Please open your eyes. I-i cant call the doctor again they'll take you away and last time that happened we didn't know if we were going to see you ever again. Please" The girl croacked in between hoarse sobs. Her voice was barely audible due to the multiple beeps the machines that surrounded us made.
I didn't know how I managed to miss it the first time. All around us were monitors and IV's and tubes, many tubes, that ended in my body. My leg was in a cast and so was my left arm. I traced one tube with my eyes and started hypervelating when I realised that it ended in my nose.
I must have made a sound that alerted the crying girl, 'cause the next thing I know, her huge watery eyes are starring in mine. "You're okay, you're okay" she whsipered and removed my hand from my torso, taking it in her two palms. "You're okay now Aria, everything's going to be just fine". She carefully took a seat on the bed and started nodding her head as if to confirm what she was saying.
"The doctor said you shouldn't talk so let me do all the talking huh?" She lauged without humour and all I could do was stare at her. Everything else hurt and nothing made sense.
Spencer took a deep breath and patted my hand. "You were in a car crash accident baby" she gasped and rubbed furiously at her eyes that had started watering again. "By the time your neighbour saw you, sprawled in the middle of the road you had,... you had lost a lot of blood Aria. And then by the time the abulance got there you had stopped breathing and the meds said there was no point to drive you to the hospital but your dad-" she stopped and shook her head "your dad wouldn't have it. He ordered the meds to save you and one of them did, for a second your heart flattered again but that was all they needed. You had surgery. Lots of them actually and here we are. One broken leg, the matching arm, just for the hell of it, four broken ribs and head damage."
My head span with all that information and Spence must have noticed.
"What's the last thing you remember?"
My throat felt drier than the Sahara dessered but I managed to croak out "Anger"
"I was angry at something" I couldn't even remember what I was so upset about.
"It's okay, don't strain yourself you'll remember in time."
"Where are my parents ? What time is it?"
"They've been here the whole time. They didn't leave not for a second. It's a miracle how I convinced them to go get some sleep now that your heart rare is stabilized" she shook her head and laughed.
"And to answer your question, it's 11:30 at night"
I starred at her in awe trying to concentrate on what she was saying and not the crippling pain on my entire body.
