A Life Without You

~Matt's POV~

"Haa... Haa... Thank... God..." I panted as I resurfaced above the water. After getting hit with that huge wave, it was hard getting up from the water. I looked around to find {Y/N}, but couldn't see her. "{Y/N}...!" I called repeatedly, but I still couldn't find her.

Oh, God. Oh, God, please no.

"Matt!!" I heard someone scream from the shore. It was Mello. He quickly swam towards me, and as soon as he noticed that {Y/N} wasn't there, he began to freak out. "I saw the wave... Where's {Y/N}??"

When I didn't answer, he grabbed my shoulders and shook me violently. "Matt... Where is she?! Where is she, Matt?"

Seeing Mello that distressed caused my voice to crack as I managed, "I don't know. She hasn't resurfaced yet."

And just like that, the life drained out of his face. His eyes, which just a few moments ago were so full of pride and joy, were now just simple glassed-over spheres.

It reminded me of back at Wammy's; That day when she took on 5 guys at once, only to break an arm and leg and pass out. Mello, upon seeing her so badly beaten, had no colour in his face. All you could see was the rage and anger as he balled up his fists. Now was no different. But instead of anger, there were other emotions. Grief. Worry. Fear. But there was one that stood out the most; Determination.

"I'm gonna find her." He said, and dove into the water. I sighed, knowing fully well that he wouldn't be able to find her on his own. I dove into the water and helped Mello search for {Y/N}.

~Mello's POV~

"I saw the wave. Where's {Y/N}?" I asked Matt once I got to him. The wave had taken both of them down, but only Matt was there. When he didn't respond, I felt my heart drop. "Matt... Where is she? Where is she, Matt?"

Matt looked me in the eyes and almost began crying. "I don't know. She hasn't resurfaced yet."

No. Not her. Please, no. God, please no.

I'm not letting go of her yet. We just had a kid. I still haven't asked her to marry me!! No, she has to live.

And with that, I looked at Matt with determination and grit my teeth. "I'm gonna find her." I muttered before diving into the water.

{Y/N}... Stay strong for me! I'm gonna find you.

I heard a faint splash behind me, and I knew right away that it was Matt. There was no way in hell that he'd sit back and watch while {Y/N} was in danger. Not after what happened when I left. I shook off the memory and dove even deeper, opening my eyes under the water to see if I could spot anything.

Where the hell are you {Y/N}?!

I swam up to the surface, took a quick breathe, and dove down again, searching as much as I could. For the first time in my entire life, I felt my heart sink deep into my chest. Even when I left, I was able to see an opportunity. But if {Y/N} was to die, then I had no choice but to die with her. I felt my eyes sting, as if I were crying, but the water made it impossible to tell.

Then I felt an urge to breathe again, so I quickly swam up to the surface and took a deep breath. While I was above water, I saw bubbles coming up from a nearby area. Is that Matt... Or...?

And as soon as I thought it, Matt came up behind me, gasping for air. "Did... You... See her?"

I didn't respond; I just dove to the bubbles. Surely enough, {Y/N} was under the water, limp and lifeless. I slung get over my shoulders and began to swim to shore. Matt swam beside me, making sure that I didn't sink whilst carrying {Y/N}.
