I'm pulled by my waist off of Shana as soon as the crowd recovers from the initial shock of what just happened. I groan and kick my legs around in protest as Jayden attempts to pull me back further before I can grab another handful of Shana's stupidly perfect hair. I swear I see real steam come out of her ears as Shana stands up and brushes herself off, glaring at me. A few of the girls behind her try to help fix her now matted hair, but she swats them away in frustration and storms in the opposite direction.
"Skyelin Miller," I hear a loud voice speak my name and my audience seems to scatter quicker than they appeared until only Jayden and I remain.
I frown, rubbing at the grazes on my knees as Mr Hendricks, the dean, stands in front of me with his arms crossed. I slowly glance up to meet his disappointed eyes and give him my most innocent smile as he shakes his head.
"My office, right now," he instructs, gesturing for me to follow him.
I sigh and look back at Jayden nervously, but he gives me a comforting smile that seems to make everything a little better. I turn and stare at the ground as I silently follow Mr Hendricks into his office and take a seat in front of his desk.
"We have absolutely zero tolerance for violence of any kind at this school, Miss Miller," he takes a seat in front of me and I can feel his eyes burning holes into me, but I refuse to make eye contact. "You know that. Do you not?"
"I know that," I mumble, waiting for his lecture to be over.
I've never really been in trouble before. I mean, I've gotten a few detentions here and there for being late or not doing my homework, but I've never been called into the dean's office. Not once.
"Who else was involved?" Mr Hendricks demands.
Being stuck in a detention with Shana would be worse than any other punishment he could possibly give me, so I decide to keep quiet. I shrug my shoulders without making eye contact.
"Skyelin, you are going to tell me exactly what happened," he attempts to scare me but I'm not budging.
I feel like I woke up a different person this morning. Today I've been fearless. I've lived harder today than any other day of my high school life. So why should I stop now? Today, I am fearless.
"Or what?" I finally make eye contact with him.
"I don't know what's gotten into you, Skyelin, but you should watch yourself," Mr Hendricks glares at me coldly and I've had enough.
"Are you going to give me detention? Suspend me? Anything?" I sit back in my seat, challenging him. "Or are you just going to keep trying to scare me? Because it's not working."
"First, you're going to tell me exactly what happened, from beginning to end," Mr Hendricks instructs, louder this time, and I raise an eyebrow at him. "Then you will sit here until I decide on your punishment. Aside from those instructions, you will not speak or move."
