"Landon..." I'm unsure of what to say, but words are no longer necessary when Tyler comes up behind me, wrapping his huge arms around my shoulders.
"Hey, Landon, man! What's going on?" He almost sounds genuine, but I can tell Landon isn't buying it.
"Hey, Tyler." I feel the tension between them as they stare each other down. Their eyes are somehow threatening in their otherwise calm faces. "You two are... seeing each other now?"
"No." I answer before Tyler can, attempting to wriggle my way out of his hold around my shoulders, but he is way too strong for me. "No, we're not."
"Skye doesn't want to put a label on anything at the moment. You know how she is." He says casually, somehow making the obvious taunt sound like nothing.
"Oh, I do." Landon's voice is steady as he says the words.
I can't stand another second of this shit. I dig my elbow into Tylers ribs and pull myself out of his arms, shooting him a glare as I walk away from him. I don't really know where I'm walking to. All I know is where I'm walking from. That seems to be a common occurence in my life, as of late. I guess when you walk away from everyone, you stop having people to walk to. So, I take a seat by myself on the grass. I sit away from Tyler, away from the cheer squad, and away from the car park which Jayden and Dani could be pulling into any second.
My mind begins to wander and I think of Landon. I think of his eyes as he spoke to Tyler. The way the sparkle left them and they became dark. It was strange to witness. He looked like a completely different person without that sparkle. Almost as if the sparkle itself is the Landon I know. As if my Landon left while his empty body stayed to speak those words to his best friend. It's strange to think that I admired that boy for years of my life. But, after all, maybe it wasn't the boy I admired. Maybe it was his sparkle.
"Skye!" The hairs on the back of my neck stand up straight at the sound of the familiar whiney voice coming from behind me. "What are you doing out here all alone?"
I hesitate before forcing a smile onto my face and turning around to look at Dani, acting surprised to see her. She sits down beside me, too close for my comfort, and I shift uncomfortably.
"Hey, Dani." I greet her as enthusiastically as I can manage.
"Is everything alright? Did something happen with Tyler? Oh no, Skye, tell me everything." She grabs my hand and looks up at me, fake concern in her huge green eyes.
"No." I say a little too harshly, pulling my hand from hers. "No, everything's fine. Tyler is just... He's getting a drink."
"Are you sure? You know you can tell me anything, right?" I want to laugh in her face, but I hold it in and try to change the subject.
"Where's Jayden?" I regret asking as soon as the words leave my mouth and I see Dani's face light up with joy. It's disgusting how much this girl doesn't know.
"Oh, Jay is just getting our blankets from the truck. We're planning to lay under the stars until the sun comes up. Isn't that the most romantic thing you've ever heard?" Dani sighs and I feel a strong urge to push her into the bonfire.
