As I make my way to the front of the building, I can't seem to stop thinking about Landon. How a boy I've barely even spoken to can make me feel the way he does is beyond me. I mean, just the sight of that boy gives me butterflies. Butterflies.
"Skye!" Shana calls my name from her seat at the bus stop, derailing my train of thought, and I look up to see her unmistakeable blue eyes and sun-bleached hair.
She wears black denim shorts and a simple white halter top with various necklaces of different lengths draped around her neck; the white of her converse seeming to make her golden skin glow. She smiles widely at me, dimples appearing on her cheeks, and my pace quickens as I walk over to sit down.
"Hey," I groan, dropping my bag to the floor before sinking into the seat beside my best friend.
"Hey." Shana's sweet smile falters as her eyes take in my appearance. "Man, you look awful. What time did you get here?"
She wipes both of her thumbs under my eyes, brushing away the eyeliner that always seems to collect there after a few hours of wearing it - especially in summer. I make a mental note to invest in a higher quality eyeliner as I give her a greatful smile.
"Like, 8:30 this morning." I sink back in my seat, letting out a sigh. "And it looks like this will be my life for the next few weeks. Well, at least until performance night."
"That's rough. I guess that's what you get for choosing the most time-consuming extra curricular." She speaks my earlier thoughts aloud and I let out another irritated groan in response.
"Okay so look, I was invited to this kickback thing tonight. It sounded kind of lame at first, but the host is a really nice girl and she said I could have a plus one, so I was thinking maybe we could just go and make our own fun?" Her persuasive blue eyes stare into mine, awaiting my answer.
"I don't know... I'm really tired." I look away, letting my head fall backwards to exaggerate my exhaustion.
"No, you'd just rather sit at home instead. Come on, Skye, I know you better than you know yourself." I mean, she isn't wrong.
I laugh before answering, "I'm no fun at parties." Shana just rolls her eyes at me so I add in, "And I am tired."
"See, but it's not a party! It's going to be totally casual," she whines. "It will be fun, I promise. We can dress up and drink and talk to cute boys that we don't know. Come on, you told me we would do more this summer. Take more risks and all that stuff? Plus, you've already spent the majority of summer break doing nothing." Again, she's right.
"Yeah, but-"
"Come on, it's time to start taking those risks. Just come with me, I promise we'll have a good time." Her eyes continue to plead with me and I let out a defeated sigh.
"Fine, alright. I'll go." The bus pulls up and I stand, grabbing my bag and pulling it over my shoulder.
"Of course you will! Okay, we're going to have to find something cuter for you to wear, though," Shana announces, playfully tugging at my old shorts, before we climb onto the bus and take our usual seats towards the back. I screw up my face, slightly ashamed of my outfit choice, and pull out my phone to text my mom.
*Hey, mom. Staying at Shana's tonight. See you tomorrow xx*
I press send as the bus goes over a speed bump, causing my phone to drop to the floor and slide under the seat in front of me. Shana watches, amused, as I try to reach it with my foot but only kick it further away.
"Hey, sorry, could you get my phone for me?" I tap on the back of the seat in front of me while still reaching for the phone.
"Yeah," the kid in front of me laughs a familiar laugh, picking up the device and holding it out for me. I laugh along with him, but freeze when I look up to see familiar blue eyes staring back at me.
Landon.
I choke on my laughter, mortified by his amused expression at my choice of lock screen; a photo of Shana and I pulling our ugliest faces. Shana reaches over and takes the phone from him with a smile, saving me from further humiliation.
"Sorry, I dropped it." I nervously state the obvious, suddenly very aware of the inevitable panda eyes that I most likely have and wiping at them while Shana giggles. Landon nods, half smiling at me, and turns back around before I have a chance to embarrass myself any further.
"Oh, man." Shana exaggerates a sigh, her breath catching as she tries to hold in her laughter. I slap her arm before sinking back into my chair and leaning my head against the window.
That went well.
