* Alice's POV *
The dripping mascara run down my cheeks and fell on the piece of paper. I quickly tried to wiped them away from my eyes and continued writing. It was a letter to Thomas. A letter that I knew he would read and broke my heart as the image of his eyes scanning over it came to mind. It made loud sobs come out of my mouth that made it hard to breathe. There was no time to waste though because I still had the rest of my plan to carry out and the taxi driver was waiting patiently for me outside.
I dug around in my drawer and found an envelope that I put the folded paper inside. Then, I put Thomas' name on the front of it, kissed it, and sealed away my heart. My fingers brushed lightly over the photo's I had took of Thomas and I from my phone and camera. I had printed them out and made a collage. More mascara was slowly dripping down my face as I thought about all of the good memories I was leaving behind.
I walked out of my room with my suitcase in my hand. My head turned to look at it one more time before I went down stairs and got into the taxi, leaving my broken heart behind. As the car started pulling out from the curb and drove down the road, I was sure I could see Thomas' figure running down the path. My eyes blinked and my view was blurred by the waterfall of tears that welled up in my eyes and flooded out. I must have been hallucinating when I thought I saw him. My mind must have been imagining the one thing...the one person...I wanted to see the most.
* Thomas' POV *
My legs took the last few strides down the path and up to Alice's front door. After pounding my fist against it a few times, John opened it with Sarah behind him.
"What's wrong Thomas?"
"Where's Alice?"
"She's at prom...with you..."
"You didn't hear her come in?"
"No, are you sure she's supposed to be here?"
"Is everything alright Thomas? What's going on?"
I pushed past them and ran up the stairs. The door swung open and I rushed inside. Looking around, I found that it was empty. I noticed how Alice's prom dress lay nearly on top of the bed and the rose I gave her was placed on top of an envelope on her dressing table.
She wasn't here...my heart slowly started to crack as I thought about how I was too late. I felt a lump in my throat and tears well up in my eyes. Slowly walking over to the table, I looked at the envelope and saw my name on it. I picked up the rose and set it aside then opened the envelope.
Inside was a piece of folded paper with her elegant script written on it. I looked over it and couldn't help but notice the tear drop that had fallen on it and dried to leave a mark on the page. Alice had obviously been crying when she wrote this letter and let the dripping mascara fall down her face. The paper was still quite wet so I could tell that it had been wrote recently. The thought of how close I must have been to stopping her kept nagging at my brain and eating away at me inside.
I took a deep breath before I started reading the letter. It said:
Dear Thomas,
I love you and I'm so sorry you have to read this. I had to leave but I couldn't without telling you how much I love you and why I've had to go away. By now, I'm sure you've already worked it out so you know that I've left because of my past. The three drug dealers I was forced to work for after my parent's death, Isaac, Ryan, and Kyle, have escaped from prison and burnt down the orphanage I lived at as a child before Sarah and John adopted me. It was a message Thomas, they're coming after me. So, I had to leave so no one would be harmed. You all mean far too much to put in danger...especially you.
