You don't really remember how you got there, but you were in medbay. You hadn't been there many times before, maybe once or twice for a mandatory check up,but other than that the place was unfamiliar to you. Your vision was a little foggy and you head was pounding uncomfortably as you tried to sit up. You called out wearily in the hopes of attracting someone's attention, maybe they could explain what was happening. You lay back down breathless and weak. What was happening? Someone gently called out your name and placed their hand gently on your shoulder.
"Bones? What's happening to me? What happened?"
Bones helped you sit up and passed you a small cup of blue-green liquid and waited as you drank it silently.
"You'll be fine okay. You collapsed at your station. When was the last time you slept?"
"I can't remember," you admitted, trying to think back across the last few nights. "At least two maybe three days ago."
Bones shook his head. "Your body can't physically function with such little sleep. We need to fix this okay?"
You had had chronic insomnia since you were a little kid. It had only gotten worse after being in space. All the medications you had taken hadn't been any help.
"Bones," you muttered quietly. "I can't sleep, it's going to kill me. What am I going to do?" You whimpered, tears starting to break from your eyes. Bones squeezed your hand and pulled you into a soft hug. "Don't cry okay, I'm going to fix it."
You took a few shaky breaths and looked up into his deep brown eyes. "But how?"
Later that night you were back in your room when your PADD made a small noise.
LM (22:41:18) - 'Sleep treatmeant starts now, come to room 439 when you're ready'
You read the message and sighed, unplugging the PADD from the charger. You were sceptical that whatever Bones had planned wouldn't really work. You had tried every kind of therapy, diet, meditation and medication. Nothing had worked for more than a month.
Bones' room was cleaner than you expected it to be. Everything was organised and in patterns, unlike the scattered mess of his office.
"Sleepy?" Bones asked with a slight grin.
"Ha ha," you muttered sarcastically. "What is this secret miracle treatment you're getting me to do?"
"It's hardly a miracle treatment. It's common sense." He muttered, offering you a seat on the sofa beside him.
"Please don't tell me you're going to get me a glass of hot milk, read me a bedtime story and then tuck me in."
"Damn, there goes my idea," he laughed sarcastically, rolling his eyes.
"So what actually is your idea?" You asked nudging his side.
"Get in some pyjamas and I'll show you," he said seriously.
"Really?"
He nodded.
"Okay I'm in pyjamas, now what?" You asked from the doorway of the bedroom.
"This will probably come off as weird, but just trust me on this alright? Come lie down."
You looked at Bones sceptically. "You sure?"
"Just trust me."
You sat down on his bed and paused for a second.
"If you'd rather not it's fine, I can get you some stronger medication or get Spock to do his hobgoblin pinch thing."
"It's fine," you muttered, sliding under the covers. "I just hope this works. "
You lay down and Bones turned the lights off. You felt the bed shift with his weight beside you. You and Bones had been close friends since first year at the academy but this was the first time you'd ever thought of him as more than a friend.
"Are you okay?" he asked gently.
"Yeah," you muttered, "I'm good."
You were facing away from him but you could feel him moving closer to you. He wrapped one of his arms gently around your waist and pulled you up against his body. He was warm and you liked how you fit into him like a puzzle piece.
"Still okay?" he asked, quieter this time.
"Very," you muttered trying not to smile.
When you opened your eyes that morning you were still warm and comfortable.
"Three minutes." Bones called out.
"Huh?" you asked sleepily sitting up.
"You were asleep in three minutes. I timed it. Three minutes."
"You're kidding?"
Bones shook his head. "I thought you had sleeping problems."
You glared at him, "I do, maybe you're just a miracle worker."
"How are you feeling?"
"Relaxed, not exhausted, comfortable," you almost laughed. "I feel amazing."
"You seem so surprised. I knew it would work. Sleeping with a partner stimulates endorphins and makes-"
"Hold on did you say partner?" You interrupted.
"I may have," he muttered under his breath, taking a sip of his coffee. "I don't know what I mean but yeah..."
"Leo I have to ask, is this just a doctor/patient thing or is it something else because it kind of feels like something more than friends..." You got up and sat on a bar stool at his bench, looking up at him expectantly.
"I don't know," he said flatly. "I don't want to talk about it. I better get dressed, my shift starts in half an hour."
He put his cup down silently and walked briskly towards the bathroom.
"So you're just going to walk away?" You muttered bitterly, standing up and getting your own bag.
He stopped and turned back to you, opening his mouth to say something but then closing it again.
"You're a coward," you muttered angrily, putting on your shoes.
"Don't call me a coward," he snapped. "You don't understand the pain I'm in."
"Of course I don't understand when you won't tell me anything. Just, don't shut me out okay."
Bones nodded and sighed. "I already stuffed up my last relationship. I don't want to do the same to this one. You're one of my only real friends. I don't want to loose that or hurt you."
"Look if you don't want a relationship I'd prefer it if you just said so-"
"You don't get it do you?! I am in love with you. I care about you more than the whole goddamn universe and I don't want to hurt you!"
You stopped for a second, lost for words. Bones finally opened up to you. You ran up to him and wrapped your arms around him. He relaxed gently in your grip and breathed a heavy sigh.
"I love you Leo. I love you, I'm so sorry I yelled at you." He pulled you closer to him and smiled. "Can I stay again tonight? And all the nights after? I don't ever want to go to bed without you again."
"Stay forever alright?"
"I will. I promise I will."
