McCoy's shifts slowly start turning into better ones. He used to class them as just good and bad shifts but even what he used to consider as good are so much better than they used to be. He stops working overtime and for the first few shifts, it's hard for him to leave so early. Orlo forces him to though, reminding him to leave as soon as the clock ticks over. He goes to protest the first time but Orlo is one of the only people in existence that is as stubborn as he is. She gives him a look and he complies, leaving medbay and sighing to himself. He barely knows what to do with all of his spare time now that he's working less. He goes back to his room and reads for a while before heading into the mess hall. Kirk and Sulu are there already, flagging him over once they see him.
"It's so weird seeing you at this time of day," Sulu mutters, a salad in one hand and chopsticks in the other.
"That nurse seems to have taken a liking to you, Bones. Stopping you from working overtime was her idea. What's her name? Argo? Ordo? Lorvo?"
"Orlo," McCoy mutters, starting on his own lunch.
"I hate to say it Bones but she's almost as stubborn as you are."
Sulu laughs, "Is that even possible?"
"You two would make a good couple actually. I feel like she'd balance you out or something."
"No wonder I worked so much damn overtime when my alternative was to have lunch with you two," Bones huffs, stuffing a large piece of potato into his mouth. He rolls his eyes and Kirk and Sulu look at each other.
"Is Bones getting defensive over a girl?" Sulu asks, a grin playing at his lips.
"No," Kirk laughs, "He can't be. Bones doesn't have feelings, especially not romantic ones."
The two laugh and Bones rolls his eyes at them. His main goal in not doing overtime is to not snap at people. He keeps eating and wonders if they're actually getting somewhere with their jokes. He probably is getting defensive over Orlo, even if he's not entirely sure why. Kirk and Sulu ask if he wants to go get a drink but he declines, muttering about having to finish some medical reports and leaving.
There's a knock at McCoy's door a few hours later and he's reasonably sure it's Kirk coming in to drunk ramble at him but he finds that it's nurse Orlo on the other side. He's seeing her out of uniform for the first time and it's almost a weird sensation to him.
"Hey," she smiles. "I came to see if you were hiding in here doing medical reports or actually spending your time doing something that doesn't involve medicine."
"I'm just finishing my reports now, then I'll relax."
She rolls her eyes, coming into his room.
"You shouldn't really be doing reports. Don't you have a hobby or something?"
"Yes," Bones says gruffly, "My job."
Orlo glares at him. "Other hobbies outside of medicine. Like piano or something, I don't know." Bones shrugs, picking up his PADD and going back to his medical reports. "There has to be something you enjoy doing other than working. Anything?"
"I don't mind cooking," he says quietly.
"Cooking?"
He nods.
"I haven't had dinner yet," she smiles.
"Not happening," he says flatly. "I don't cook for other people. I just cook when it's quiet and I need something to take my mind off things. I'm a doctor dammit, not a chef."
