Mason's POV

Gem's hand on my own was the only thing grounding me as my nerves rose higher and higher as we neared our destination. I was now considered old enough to take on the responsibilities of being my pack's Alpha, along with the help and advice of my father. I'd been waiting for this moment my whole life, this was my birthright, my people already followed me and did as i said even before this night and they would continue to do so after this night.

I looked to my left and couldn't help but smile as i watched my mate play with the the silky material of her floor length red dress. When i'd seen her at the base of the stairs waiting for me i swear i felt my heart almost stop because of her jaw dropping beauty. Her long hair straightened and slicked back slightly to add a modern look and her red mask that that only covered her eyes made her dark eyes even darker and seductive as she looked me up and down. The gown had a slight trail and hugged her curves, it was halterneck and backless and made my wolf howl with excitement.

It had been my mother's idea to have the party be a masquerade, she said it would 'add to the atmosphere of the party' although i had just wanted to have a normal party with my friends from the pack and school and then a formal celebration separately but my mother loved grand things and so her son's initiation into being an Alpha had to be the most talked about thing all year.

From the opposite side of the limousine my little sister, Becca, was talking to my mother in an excited voice, asking dozens of questions as her curiosity got the better of her. Her blue summer dress made her blue eyes seem even brighter and her black hair had grown to just past her shoulders since the last time i had been with her and it was pulled back into a plait. Even in the dim light her prominent freckles that were splattered across her face made her look even more innocent and youthful than she truly was at 8 years old. My mother had a humorous look on her face as she listened to little Becca ramble on, her dark hair pinned into a bun and her green eyes sparkled as she watched her daughter.

My father had opted for shotgun seat in the front beside Vince, who to my pleasant surprise was driving safely and on the speed limit. My father and I had both opted for traditional black suits and my mother pointed out how we looked so alike, with us both having blue eyes and dark hair, however he had more freckles then i had.

...

After my family and I entered the grand ballroom from one of the side doors, as to avoid having to travel through the dance floor with my sister my mother straightened my black tie and fussed with my suit before running off to get everyone in the ballroom. My father guided me to a large table at the end of the hall and leant casually against the furniture.

Feeling a warm hand on mine i turned and smiled at my mate, i searched her eyes to try and see what she was feeling but was slightly surprised when i couldn't read her well. Shrugging it off i tried to calm my nerves as the ballroom begun to fill up from the guests entering mainly from the dance room but from rooms upstairs.

Suddenly a woman walked out of an adjoining hallway and into the room, my breath hitched slightly and i felt my mouth gape open slightly as i admired the stranger.

Even from a distance i could tell she looked like a goddess, with long dark hair, a tight black dress that hugged her curves and showed off her chest, the mesmerizing hue of purple in her black eyes and the way her presence changed the whole aura of the room. She bled mystery and i couldn't help but being curious about this stranger.

Remembering Gemima beside me i forced my head to the side and noticed my mother approaching. Letting go of my mates hand gently i briskly walked to meet her halfway to ask her something.

"That woman there, the one with the purple eyes, who is she" I whispered in my mother's ear.

With surprise i watched my mother's eyes narrow slightly as she saw the woman i was talking about. "She is apart of the council. Best to stay clear of her, she was invited only because of the position she holds on the council. She's a rogue, don't be too bothered by her" my mother said before stepping in front of the large group gathered, beginning her talk.
