I heard the door creak shut behind you
Watched you with hands in front of your face
To block the cold
Steamy breaths swirled around you as
Tense steps carried you away from me
Watching at the window
All I ever did was watch youYou were a match
Warm and then hot and then excruciating
Beautiful until you burned
All the way down
It was so cold the night you left
But your flame was brightest
Just before you snuffed it outThe grey-blue afternoon that took you away
Is splattered with blood
I watched in the doorway
All I ever did was watch youYou kissed my cheek the night before
The Night
And I thought that maybe I would be enough
But I heard the mirror shatter and
Knew that I was too glass and not enough broken
To cut the rope from around your neckI saw your picture in the paper
Traced your face in black and white
Until the ink stained my fingers
Your features disappeared in a meaningless smudge
So I could pretend it wasn't you
All broken and no glass
But I would have chipped away the jagged edges
If I could have watched you
For just a little longer
