Cockroaches

TAYLOR POV

A lot of the time they get too close, sometimes they try to touch me, occasionally my security doesn't react fast enough, but rarely do they injure me. Actually make that never. Never before have the paparazzi cause me physical pain, emotional pain is a whole other matter but we won't dwell on that.

"Let them through.... come on... back up!" Ian, who was our security guy tonight, shouted as we came out of the restaurant to go to the car.

Adam was holding my hand tightly and leading me through the building crowd of paparazzi blocking our way.

*40 minutes earlier*

We had made it to the restaurant and inside before anyone got wind of us being there, but as we were eating they gathered. Like flies gathering on a bit of food.... Multiplying to the point at which the whole sidewalk outside looked full. We were in New York, so the sidewalk wasn't that wide and, since the restaurant was small, there was therefore not much space outside for them to stand and wait for us to emerge.

We could see them congregating and it made me anxious. Adam noticed my breathing change and placed his hand on top of mine on the table.

"Are you ok, babe?" He asked, rubbing small circles on the top of my hand with his thumb.

"Yeah.... I guess so... I just wish they would leave us alone sometimes; you know?" I said, smiling slightly at Adam.

"I know... but don't worry, Ian will keep them back, and we only have like 3 steps to get to the car and another 5 or so to get from the car to the apartment building, and then we are free of those pesky cockroaches." Adam replied, making me calm down slightly.

Dealing with the paparazzi had become somewhat less daunting since I had Adam with me. I knew he hated them with a passion, but dealt with them for me and would protect me at all costs from their stupid questions and cameras. He'd been doing it since the beginning and, although the interest I us had increased exponentially, he didn't show signs of ever stopping.

*back to leaving the restaurant*

We walked towards the car, with me focusing on putting one foot in front of the other and following Adam's legs without looking up much.

Suddenly I felt someone fall against my arm, breaking my contact with Adam, followed by lots of flashes and me being pushed backwards. I didn't react fast enough and felt myself falling backwards in a complete daze.

I looked up slightly and saw two paps with their cameras in my face.

"What the hell! Get away right now!" Adam bellowed from above me, shoving the paps away and holding out his hand for me. He wrapped his arms around me as soon as I was up and practically lifted me up and placed me in the car.

"Ian, keep Taylor in the car please." Adam said, smiling slightly at me and nodding at Ian.

"Sure." Ian replied, seating himself upfront as Adam closed the car door.

ADAM POV

I felt Taylor's hand leave mine and I spun around to find there had been a scuffle and one of the photographers had been pushed forward into our arms, followed by a few more who pushed Taylor down.

Immediately there were photographers surrounding her as she lay on the ground. I shoved my way through the small group.

"What the hell?!" I shouted pushing through the photographers and helping Taylor up and into the car.

I made sure she was in the car and told Ian to keep her there as I closed the door. I knew he would keep her safe.

"What the fuck just happened? Was your aim to injure one of America's most loved pop stars? Was your aim to get whoever you work for sued for reckless endangerment?" I boomed at them all, shoving away the cameras that were pointed in my face.

"Who do you work for?" I asked one of the guys who was taking photos of Taylor when she was on the ground, who cowered away. I kept asking around and no one answered me.

"It's not like you can do anything, you're the ones who are in the public eye. You chose this life, deal with it." One of the vermin said. I looked around trying to find the source of the comments, spotting a smarmy man near the back of the crowd with a smirk on his face. I approached him.

"Oh yeah? I 'chose' this? No, I bloody hell did not! I'll tell you what I chose: I chose to pursue my passion of making music, I chose to date one of the most amazing women I have ever met, I chose to take her for dinner tonight at this restaurant. I did not choose for you guys to take photos of every element of our evening, I did not choose for my beautiful girlfriend to be pushed to the ground by you, I did not choose to have to spend time convincing an incredibly strong woman that it would be fine walking the 3 steps to the car. Do you get where I'm coming from?" I asked them all, trying to maintain my calm as much as possible as I glared at the smart-alec pap. "You are damn lucky that Taylor is watching right now, otherwise I wouldn't have stayed this calm and you would probably be well and truly fucked up right now. Now get your pathetic ass out of here and I don't ever want to see you again.... All of you."

I took a few deep breaths as I walked around the other side of the car and got in.

"Please go." I told our driver, keeping my eyes closed not wanting to see Taylor's face. She never liked me getting angry.

"Adam...." Taylor said quietly, linking her fingers with mine and laying her head on my shoulder.

"Yeah babe?" I said, opening one eye to see her looking at me with a small smile on her face.

"Thank you." She said, smiling at me sweetly and nuzzling her head on the top of my arm, making me lift my arm and wrap it around her shoulder as the car drove down the busy streets of New York.

"You're welcome babe." I said, leaning down to kiss her gently, "Wait, are you ok?" I asked, suddenly remembering she had fallen over.

"Yeah, I'm good. No scratches, no pain apart from my butt from landing on the sidewalk." She said.

"That's not exactly what I meant...." I continued looking at her and placing my hand on her stomach gently.

"I think we are both fine." She said, smiling widely at me.

We had just found out a few days ago that Taylor was pregnant and tonight was meant to be a sort of celebration for the two of us.

"Okay.... But you'll let me know if anything doesn't feel right?" I asked her, making her smile and nod at me, stretching up to give me another kiss.

"Promise." She replied, leaning her full weight against me and closing her eyes as we wound through the streets and back to the apartment.
