Apologies in advance if it's not exactly what you wanted, but this is the last part of this 'our somg' mini-series within a story..
"Let me tell you a story about a prince and a princess." The father told his young daughter, who was seated next to him on a small single bed covered in stuffed animal cats and various dolls.
"A real princess?" She asked in awe.
"Yeah, a real princess just like you." He replied, taping the tip of her nose and making her giggle in the way only young children do. "Are you ready?"
She nodded her head and lay down against his side as he put an arm around her shoulders.
"The story begins one day in February. That was the day the prince and princess met each other for the first time. It was like a bolt of lightning hit them all at once. They quickly became friends and spent all their time together. Soon they fell in love. Now, this princess was a very important person in the world and lots of people wanted to know where she was and what she was doing. That meant that there were always photographers following her and people writing silly stories about her. The prince did not like this very much, because he wasn't used to it, but the princess made sure he felt safe and her helpers stopped the silly stories from being written." The father said, as his daughter stared up at him in awe. "The princess and the prince always had to travel around the world for their jobs, but made sure they never lost each other. Through all the nasty stories and all the time apart, the prince and princess stayed brave and strong, never letting each other go. The princess wrote a story for the prince, but didn't want anyone to know she had written it, so they pretended someone else had written it. It was their little secret. Everything was going well in their lives. They were happy and they had everything they could want. That was all good, until the day the prince got angry and the princess went away. They didn't see each other for a very long time and their armies mounted defences against each other. The princess became friends with a duke, but he soon had to go away. One day, the princess decided to read her story out loud for some of her friends, but first asked the prince permission as she had given it to him. He agreed that it was okay, and everyone cheered. One day the prince and princess met again and quickly they fell in love again. The prince decided he didn't ever want to lose his princess again and asked her to marry him. She agreed immediately and they lived happily ever after with many little princes and princesses of their own."
The father finished talking and looked down to see his daughter's eyes closed and chest rising and falling gently. He carefully laid her down and got up from the small bed, tip toeing out of the room and pulling the door to after putting her nightlight on.
As he was closing the door he felt someone tap his shoulder.
"Regaling our little girl with our very own fairy-tale tonight?" He heard his wife say as he turned around.
"Part of it." He said sheepishly.
"It was cute, she was enthralled." His wife told him, standing on her tiptoes slightly to wrap her arms around his neck, "But you stopped before the best part. The extravagant wedding of princess Taylor and prince Adam, and the little princes and princesses that followed it."
"That's a story for another night babe." Adam said, winking at Taylor, "Let's get to bed before any of those little princes and princesses wake up."
It had been nearly 6 years since Adam had proposed to Taylor at the Grammy awards. The news had quickly spread amongst their family and friends, and everyone was thrilled. They took their time telling the world, as the shock of them attending the Grammys was enough to keep the fans excited for a while. It was nearly the day of the wedding, a mere 5 months after Adam had proposed, that anyone outside their close circle got wind of the upcoming nuptials. It was an extravagant but small ceremony and reception, held in the South of France. Adam and Taylor were very happy together, and had started to look back at the previous year as a blip. It was like the universe had wanted to test them, but their love stood strong through it all.
Within a year of getting married they had had their first child, a son named Joshua. Josh was now 5 years old. Soon followed their only little princess so far, named Aryanna, or Anna to most people, who was nearly 4. Then came their little boy, Rylie, who was 2 and a half. Taylor was also 8 months pregnant with another little girl, who they were going to name Melody.
"This little princess is wide awake." Taylor sighed, rubbing her round belly as she sat back on their bed, "No sleep for me."
"Come on, baby girl.... Let your momma sleep." Adam wished conspiratorially to her belly, making them both laugh slightly. "She is requesting that you sing to her.... then she will consider sleeping."
"You just want me to sing it don't you?!" Taylor said, rolling her eyes.
"You caught me. I'll do anything to hear you sing, babe." Adam said, laughing and wrapping his arms around her chest as he sat behind her. "And when it's our song.... Well there's nothing better."
"I can give it a try...." She said, sounding very sceptical about it helping.
Adam leaned back, pulling her down to lie on his chest as she traced shapes on her now exposed belly and quietly sang: "Baby, this is what you came for.... Lightning strikes every time she moves...And everybody's watching her.... But she's looking at you, oh, oh...."
Gradually the kicking slowed down and the house was still and quiet apart from Taylor's whispered vocals as she continued the song, slowly closing her eyes and falling asleep in Adam's arms.
Their masterpiece, the tie that kept them linked and brought them back together. All their best memories were around that one song. The first time they went into a studio together, the turmoil around it following their break up, how it lead them back to one and other, their Grammy win and the excitement of that night.... And it was now the song that their kids asked for when they were feeling sad, it was the song that had repeatedly kept their kicking unborn children from breaking Taylor's ribs.
It was magic. And it would forever be their song.
