SHANE'S POV

Nate and I used to be the best of friends growing up. We would do everything together. I could've called him a brother at one point in my life.
Once we became teenagers things began to change for both of us. We both went down a dark path, but in very different ways. I became someone I didn't want to. I became a bully.
I was going through some crap and took it out on other people, mostly Kat.

But, Nate... He went real dark. He become someone I didn't even recognize. We began to clash with each other.
I had my limits but he didn't seem to care about having limits. We had grown to hate each other. I saw him do something that was unspeakable before I got sent to juvie. I didn't realize what he was doing at first but when I did it was too late. I wish I could undo what he did. I wish I could unknown what I know.

------------

"What are you doing here?" I say between clenched teeth as I stand up from the hospital bed.
"I came to check up on you bud." He flashed his fake-ass smile. I stand next to Kat and glance at her. I can tell she doesn't believe a word coming out of his mouth.
My mom on the other hand only remembers Nate as my friend and she believes every word he says.
"Hello Nate. That's sweet of you." My mom says, smiling at him.
I keep glancing at Kat. I know she was dating him before I was sent away.
"Hello Ms. Winters." He smiles at her again.
"Mom. I'm a little hungry could you get me some food...please." I say, showcasing my best puppy dog eye.
"Sure thing honey. I'll be back in a little while." She smiles before leaving the room.
The tension grows thicker as she leaves the room. Kat seems to panic once all three of us are alone. Something must have happened today. I couldn't be at school with her. He must've done something in class. I'll have to remember to ask her about school later.
"What are you really doing here Nate?" I ask with venom in my tone.
"Well I heard you were in the hospital." His eyes gleam with a knowing look.
"I wanted to see how my best friend was holding up." The sarcasm drips from his mouth. He chuckles darkly.
I narrow my eyes at him. I've seen that look before. He's hiding something, I can definitely tell.
"Oh I'm sure you were broken up about me." I say with the same level of sarcasm. Kat has ceased to say a word to either of us, opposed to her usual opinionated thoughts.
Nate hasn't stopped staring at her since he got here. I step closer to her, almost in front of her in an attempt to shield him from whatever he's thinking.
I start to feel dizzy but I brush it off.
"Are you sure it had nothing to do with Kat?" I point out. He chuckles, looking away. Kat looks up at me pleading with her eyes.
"I just wanted to say hi...to both of you." He steps a little closer to Kat and so do I. " I just gotta say Kat, your choice in men has gone downhill since we were together huh? Shame really." He gestures towards me, shaking his head. Kat's jaw clenches at his words. Personally I've had enough of him.
"Okay, you've made whatever point you came here to make. Are you done?" I say. I'm too mentally and physically tired for this.
"For now..." He winks before exiting the room.
I see Kat's posture relax as he gets farther away from us. I sit on the edge of my bed trying to stop the dizziness I'm feeling. "So what happened?" I ask Kat, simply.
"Wha-What do you mean?" She says looking nervous again.
"I'm guessing something happened at school with you two. So what was it?" I clarify.
She sighs in what looks like relief.
"Oh it was nothing really... He was just...uh messing around with me at school and I wasn't  in the mood for games." She says looking away. I want to ask for the truth, knowing that she's not telling it but I know that way doesn't work on her. I leave it alone... For now.
The tension still lingers in the room as my mom returns from getting me some food. The only difference is this time, she notices.
She looks at both me and Kat.
"What's going on?" She asks still looking back and forth at both of us.
Kat and I simultaneously look at each other and then back at my mom.
We speak at the same time.
"Nothing."

KAT'S POV

I didn't know how to react when I saw Nate saunter through the door like he comes here all the time. I completely froze at the sight of him. I can't seem to ever get away from him. He always seems to find a way to slither into my life.
Nate and Shane were a dangerous duo when they used to be friends. They were probably the biggest bullies in the school. They both seemed to have an odd interest in me at different times. Shane's was his insane interest in making sure my life was a living hell. I remember how big and scary he used to be to me. I was too scared to even look him in the eyes when I was younger. That always used to make him laugh. Things have really changed.
Nate on the other hand seemed to have an actual interest in me.
It was actually right after they stopped being friends.
I guess his interest in me was not what I thought. That's how I ended up in the back of his car on that dreadful night.

------------

I ended up spending all day hanging out with Shane in his hospital room.
I would never admit this to him but hanging out with him is usually the highlight of my day, especially since he can't be at school.

"So, wanna make a bet?" Shane asks, turning to look at me. He's currently standing by the monitor, twirling a loose wire.
"About what?" I ask, bored.
"I wanna bet that, the old guy out there is going to finally talk to the nice old lady." He smirks at me.
Since the first day we've been hanging out since he's been in the hospital, we've been watching these two people who sit at the tables outside of Shane's room.
The guy sits at one table in the corner and the women sits at the table on the opposite side. We both noticed that the old man always admired her and tried to talk to her but would back out at the last second. It was the cutest thing I've seen.
"No way! He's too scared, look at him." I say, pointing towards the open door. Shane saunters around the room, playing with random things.
"Ugh, you're such a cynic kitty." He looks at me, rolling his eyes.
"Not a cynic, a realist, there's a difference." I narrow my eyes at him.
"Okay then." He smiles at me, nudging my shoulder lightly.
I shove him back, lightly.
He stumbled backwards farther then I expected, clutching his head.
He stumbles even farther collapsing on the floor, groaning.
"Uhrharg!! Kat!" He struggles to get out.
"Shane!" I fall to the floor, gripping his arm. I see a small amount of blood coming out of the side of his mouth.

"Nurse! Doctor Collins! Help!" I call out pressing the 'nurse' button on the wall. The nurses and the doctor rush into the room, crowding around Shane, pushing me back to the wall.

"We can't hold off much longer he's got to go into surgery. Now!" The doctor recites and they start putting him on a gurney. I start backing out of the room, feeling like I can't breath.
"Ka-Kat?" Shane coughs, weakly waving me over. I rush over to him, searching his face.
His hand weakly grabs mine.
He says one last thing before they rush him into to surgery.
"Kat...please...don't leave."
