Chapter 12: Jail

KAT'S POV

"So you like wanna play another game or something?" Shane asks sitting on the floor as I am sat across from him.
"Shane we've played five games already and you've cheated every time." I say turning my back to him pretending to be mad.

"Oh come on kitty!" Shane says.

"Hey you two keep it down before I come over there you hear?" Mr. Shepard says without looking up from his newspaper.

Shane is currently sitting in a jail cell, me sitting across from him on the other side of the bars facing away from him. After Shane's little stunt in the closet to get me to confess about what Jake did in the bathroom he was furious. He decided it was the best idea to track the guy down and beat him to a pulp.

"You have to talk to me kitty! I'm this close to playing the harmonica and marking tallies on the wall with chalk." he begs. I smile at how overdramatic he's being. I turn around. "You've only been here for two hours calm down."

"Where's my son? Where's Shane?" I hear Shane's mom down the hall.

Shane's eyes widen and he frowns.

"If she kills me take care of my car!" he says in a serious tone. I chuckle as I hear heals clicking towards us.
I stand up as she comes and stands next to me looking down at shane.

"Hi mom." he chuckles nervously.

"Do you want to tell my why you're in jail? I had a very important meeting." she scolds him. I just stand there smiling even though I shouldn't but seeing Shane this way is priceless.
"Sorry mom." he says giving her his puppy eyes. her anger melts away quickly. even I want to go in there and give him a big hug with those eyes. Mr.Shepard comes over giving her papers to release Shane. she signs and he releases Shane.

"Well it was a pleasure Robert. maybe I'll come visit soon!" Shane says to Mr Shepard earning Shane a slap in the head my his mother.
"Oh I'm sure I'll see you soon boy." he says walking to his office.
Once we were in Jennifer's car she starts asking Shane questions.

"So why did you beat up that boy Shane?" she asked.

Shane stays quiet not saying anything about me or Jake which I'm thankful for. "Well if your not going to tell me then you are grounded for three weeks and no TV, video games or phone." she says. I start feeling guilty this is all my fault.

"Mrs. Winters" I start and Shane spins around in the front seat looking at me probably thinking I'm going to come clean. like I would tell anyone especially an adult.

"Don't be so harsh on him he was helping me." I say to her and Shane keeps staring at me.
"What do you mean?" she asks.

"Well Jake was....bullying me and it got a little out of hand." I say and Shane scoffs at my under exaggeration. he knows what Jake really did.

"Bullying you? You should tell someone!" she says and my eyes widen.
"No Mrs winters, it's fine really it was one time and I think Shane probably scared him off." I say and Shane smiles proudly.

She drops us off at her house before going back to her meeting.
"Uh thanks for what you did you didn't have to..." I say shyly, to my surprise Shane brings me into a bone crushing hug. I bring my arms up to his back and hug him back not missing that shiver he got when I hugged him back.

He walked me home and my dad decided to invite him in to eat. After dinner I took a quick shower. once I got out, fully dressed, I see Shane laying on my bed reading a book.

He put it down looking pissed at me.

What did I do?

"So were you ever going to tell me about Jake or were you just gonna let him get away with it?" he says and I look shocked.
"I-I was going to tell you eventually." I lie.
"Kat, Look at who you are talking to I know you are lying. You weren't going to tell me."
I look down. "You were just going to let him and Brit walk all over you."
"Brit has nothing to do with this." I say looking down. To my surprise Shane puts his finger under my chin and tilts my head up to look him in his eyes.

"Don't. Jake spilled everything about how they were in on it together on him trying to ...hurt you." I wasn't going to mention that Brit was a part of this.

"Don't kill them I mean I know they've done bad things but then you'll end up rotting in a jail cell and then you'll turn into a crazy man yelling out to your imaginary cow while your family watches you go mad-." I say getting cut off by Shane putting his hand over my mouth, laughing.
"Where the hell did you get that?" he laughs.
"Tv." I mumble under his hand.
He let's go and laughs his ass off. I blush in embarrassment.
"You don't have to rub it in." I say, laying down with my back to him pulling the covers over my head.

"Oh come on I was just-" I cut him off.

"Being an ass."I say still under the blankets.I was half joking half really mad at him for yelling at me.
"Ok I'm sorry. I promise I won't be mean next time you go on a ramble like that." he says. I laugh dryly and turn off the lamp telling him I'm done talking to him. I know he's going to stay because I hear him go and take a shower.
I'm still awake when I feel him lay next to me and pull the covers over him.

"Hey kit Kat?" Shane whispers.

"Yeah."

"You know we are gonna make Brit pay for what she tried to do?" he says with anger in his voice. I can't help but smile at his protectiveness although it is still confusing.
"Whatever." I say not turning around.
We eventually fall asleep quickly after this exhausting day.
