SHANE'S POV
I wake up groggily, slowly blinking open my heavy eyelids. I feel every part of my body ache with a pain that's so intense it's almost numbing. Everything is fuzzy and I can feel the morphine wearing off very slowly as the pain keeps getting worse. I attempt to try and move but every movement is a shot of pain through my body. I can feel the tightness of the bandages around my head and my stomach. I sigh in relief as I realize that I got through the surgery alive.
The last thing I remembered before I went unconscious was feeling myself bleed out and the throbbing pain exploding through my body.
Then everything went black.
I ignore the pain as I try to move my head around to see. I first look towards the door and see nurses and doctors walking past, swiftly as usual. I don't see my mom around but I see all her stuff on the wooden chair by the door. I move my head to the other side and am surprised to see Kat curled up on the small couch chair, sleeping.
She actually stayed. I feel a tinge of gratefulness towards her. It was all in the moment I just wanted someone to be there.
I just watch her for a while until I see her slowly waking up. As she turns her head and looks at me I greet her.
"Hey, Kitty." I give her a weak smirk.
She looks at me with wide eyes as she sits up in her seat.
She finally smiles back at me.
"Hey. You're out of surgery." She exclaims, giving me another smile.
I can't help but smile back at her excited expression. I nod before wincing at the pain from the excessive movement.
"Hey don't move you idiot." Kat says moving closer to me.
She gingerly puts her hand on the side of my head, where the pain was coming from. Too shocked to say anything, I just look at her.
I mentally shake away my shock and ask her a question. "Do you know where my mom is?"
She seems to realize what she was doing and retracts her hand back into her lap.
"Um last I saw her your step-dad came by to bring her home to refresh." She explains to me.
"She didn't want to stay?" I ask in a low voice.
Kat chuckles lightly. "Actually she didn't want to leave the place. Your step-dad had to practically drag her out of the hospital to get her to go."
I smile at my moms stubbornness.
"I'm glad she's getting some rest." I look up at her before continuing.
"Thanks for staying, by the way"
"Of course, I mean who else is going to annoy the hell out of you while you're stuck here." She says, giving me a wink.
I roll my eyes. "Mmmm wow thanks." I say sarcastically, laughing.
"Anytime." She nods to me.
I look up at her and see her look at the door and then her eyes widen in realization.
"Oh my god! Guess what?" She says excitedly, grabbing my wrist. I ignore the slight pain I feel at the pressure, too enamored at her tone.
"What?" I say, confused.
"You won." She looks at me.
"What do you mean?" I crinkles my eyebrows and look at her.
"Old guy talked to the old lady while you were in surgery." She smiles.
"They had dinner together last night at that table." She point to the table right outside my hospital room. "I've got to admit it was pretty adorable."
I laugh. "No way! He actually did it." I look at her accusingly. "I told you. Your cynicism was wrong again."
She narrows her eyes at me. "Whatever." She says quickly.
Before I get to continue gloating I see my mom walk through the door. As she sees me awake she runs over to me and gives me a hug.
"Oh honey. You're ok." She says into my ear.
Kat gets up heading over to the door to leave. "You coming back later?" I ask before she leaves.
She grabs the door frame turning to look at me. "Why? So you can gloat some more?" She mocks. I just give her a knowing smile. "Yeah, I'll be back in a couple hours. I'm going to go home for a bit. Give you guys some room." I nod back at her.
My mom stops her again before she leaves.
"Thank you, dear." My mom says to Kat. She nods back at her before she leaves.
My mom backs up looking me over.
"How are you feeling?" She gives me a worried look. There's no use in lying to her. "I'm kind of in a lot of pain." I say honestly. "I'm also kind of hungry too." I admit.
My mom laughs at me. "Ok I'll have the doctor come check on you after I get you some food." She gets up heading for the door.
"Thanks mama." I give her a big smile.
So the morphine hasn't worn of completely.

KAT'S POV

I get home and sigh in relief. I felt like I could finally go home for a while after I knew he was going to be ok. I wanted to give them some privacy to talk and I really needed a shower.
As I walk in, my dad is walking down the stairs.
"Hey Kat. How's Shane doing?" He asked. I can tell he's getting ready to go to work. "He's doing a lot better." I answer him. He nods giving me a mysterious smile.
"What?" I say confused.
"Nothing." He keeps smiling. "Tomorrow is Monday ok? So get back home at a decent time for school ok?" He asks heading towards the door.
"Got it." I say before he closes the door. I head upstairs, strip out of my clothes and jump right into the shower, before getting dressed and ready to head back over to the hospital as promised.

SHANE'S POV

"You seem to be responding well to the surgery. All seems to be alright for now." The Doctor says putting his examining tools away. "It is a good thing we got to you in time. You are a lucky kid." He says before heading out the door.
My mom seems pleased at his words.

Kat walks in minutes after the doctor leaves, sitting back on that couch chair.
"How you doing?" She asks.
"It's all good, according to the doctor."
She nods. "That sounds good."
My mom and the doctor come back to the room with two police officers and a detective women behind them.
I look up confused and Kat sits up straighter with the same expression on her face.
"What's going on mom?" I ask as she sits beside me.
"Because the injuries happened at a official boxing match the police had to check that it was all legal." The doctor said.
The detective women comes up to me.
"Instead we found out some disturbing information about your particular match." She begins. My heart starts beating at her tone.
"Your opponent was a hired hit man." She continues.
"Someone hired him to...hurt you."
