KAT'S POV

"Hey kat." I hear Nikki say from behind me. at the moment I have my hood up trying to stay unseen, which obviously didn't work.
"Hey." I say trying to cover my face.
Nikki sits next to me and comes closer.
"What's wrong with you?" she says leaning in. in a swift move she pulls down my hood revealing the bruise on my cheek and the cut on my lip.

"What happened to you?!"

It's been four days since the almost kiss with Shane and I've been avoiding Alex and shane, which is not that hard since he hasn't been in school since that day which would explain why my face became a punching bag.
"I was getting my things from my locker and Brit came up extra pissed and well..."I say pointing to my face.
I knew Brit's silence that day was weird. she was just waiting until I was alone to hurt me for "yelling" at her boyfriend as she put it.
The bell rings telling everyone to sit down in their seats. Nikki goes to her seat eyeing me.

Then to make my day even better, my worst nightmare comes through the door.

Nate.

And to add to my joy he decides to sit right next to me because Shane isn't here to do so.
These are the times I really wish Shane was here. I miss him because of the way he would protect me from things like this.

"Where's your boyfriend?" Nate says with mocking eyes. I ignore him feeling very uncomfortable. "I gotta say I never thought in a million years that I'd see you two actually getting along, you know?" He speaks to me as though nothing has happened.
"Hey answer me." he says harshly gripping my arm making me turn my face, scared.
He let's go with a smile, knowing he still had control over me.

----------------------------------------------
Luckily I get through the rest of the day alive only being abused by Brit few times.
I stand outside my front door put my hood up and cover my face before going in.
I go in to find my dad talking to Shane, who looks tired and just worn out. When the door slams they both look up at me and Shane's eyes rest on me, softening.
My dad senses some tension because he excuses himself leaving us alone in the living room.
" Hey kitty." he chuckles nervously. I fight the urge to smile at that annoying nickname that I secretly love.
"Hi." I'm confused why is he here.
"I wanted to talk to you." he says as if reading my mind.
"Look I'm sorry for what happened at my house and what Alex said and for avoiding you I was just trying to figure things out and-" he cuts himself off giving me a weird look.

"What?" I ask. he walks extremely close and pulls down my hoodie and moves my hair.
His jaw clenches and he rubs his thumb over the bruise on my cheek.
"Who did this? did Brit do this?" he asks looking me in the eyes. I look down which confirms his thoughts.
"And I wasn't there to help you." he says under his breath but I still hear.
"I'm so sorry I wasn't there."he says.
I can't even say anything back. this affection is so different and weird especially coming from Shane.
"It's ok." is all I can choke out.
Oh god! this is wrong. we are not joking around with our banter or making fun of each other it shouldn't be like this.

We eventually get through the awkwardness with him promising to always come to school and me telling him to stop overreacting , which lead into our banter where i feel a lot more comfortable.
We sit on the couch and just talk and eat gummy bears. We both go quiet for a few seconds before he starts speaking again.
"Hey so I have a boxing match this Sunday and you and your dad and brother should come." He says alittle shyly. Wow I've never seen him look this nervous.
"Hmmm you beating the crap out of another guy? Is there going to be food?" I ask with a serious face.
He chuckles and nods."Yes there will be lots of food kitty."
I smile I love me some food. "we'll be there." I say quickly.
He just laughs and says ok.

Luckily he hasn't brought up the almost kiss and we can act the same as before....mostly.

----------------------------------------------
I wake up on the couch in Shane's arms with Shane still sleeping.
What the hell? the last thing I remember was it was 2:00 pm and we were arguing about what to watch.
I yawn and stand up to see my mom standing behind the couch watching us.

that's freaking creepy.

I let out a small scream but luckily Shane doesn't wake up.
"What are you doing here?" I say getting angry.
"What are you doing? is that your boyfriend?" she ignores my question.
"It's none of your business any more." I say walking around the couch.
"You need to leave." I say pointing to the door. I then hear my dad's footsteps from upstairs and so does she because she turns and leaves quickly before he sees her.
My dad comes down just as she leaves. "hey what's wrong? I heard a scream." how did he hear it but not Shane?
"What? oh nothing the scream came from the tv." I say and thanks to Shane winning our tv argument it's on something scary so there would be screaming.
"Oh ok." he says walking into the kitchen. I should tell him about mom showing up a lot but he doesn't need anymore on his plate so I keep quiet.

I decide to change the subject.

"So dad, Shane invited us to go see his boxing match this Sunday." I say and his face lights up. his boxing career ended when Austin was born and he started drinking so he lives vicariously through shane.
"We are definitely going." he says smiling.
I nod and go back to the living room just in time to see Shane wake up and look straight at me, smiling.

Oh god.

"Morning kitty." he says pulling out his phone.
"Hi." I say just standing there. he looks down at his phone and scrunched his face.
"Oh crap my mom has been calling all night I should get going." he says with a sheepish look.
"Oh." I say as we both walk to the front door.

"I hope you don't get into too much trouble."

He chuckles nervously.
